FAMU Law Professor Rhoda Pierre Cato is coordinating the film series as a spinoff from her Law and Film Seminar. The screenings are open.
Films selected for screening reflect a broad theme, “Law Makes the World Go Round” that underscores how vastly law impacts our daily lives. A variety of topics including race relations, women’s equality, sexual harassment, homelessness, prison awareness and family relations presented in the films are sure to educate, entertain, and generate provocative conversation and ideas.
“I am Not Your Negro” is based on James Baldwin’s unfinished manuscript examining race relations in the United States. “When We Were Kings” won the Academy Award in 1996 for best documentary. It is the story of champion Muhammad Ali and his quest to regain the heavyweight boxing title after being stripped of it when he refused to serve in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.
“These films tell stories that have been forgotten by some, unheard by others, and are relevant to all humanity,” said Cato. “My students asked that we share the experience of viewing and discussing films such as the ones offered in this series, with a broader audience. It’s a chance to see how law becomes personal, communal and historical.”
The film series began on February 7 and will continue through April 4.
