LaSalle D. Leffall Jr., the noted American Cancer Surgeon and Howard University College of Medicine professor died peacefully yesterday at the age of 89, according to Howard University President Wayne A.I. Frederick, M.D.  Frederick made the announcement earlier today via a social media post.

Dr. Leffall, a native of Quincy, FL, graduated high school at the age of 15, and three years later earned his undergraduate degree from FAMU. Upon graduation from FAMU, he applied for admission to both Meharry Medical College and Howard University.  When he heard from neither, then FAMU President William Gray, got on the phone and called the President of Howard and secured Leffall’s admission.

Leffall went on to become the first black President of the American Cancer Society and the American College of Surgeons.

Frederick shared,”Leffall was a mentor, friend, and father figure to me.  I’m humbled to have known this man so well. His grace with his students, patients, and the world was an example of love and selflessness.”

“I will continue to live in your honor and by your example of unconditional love,” he added.
