FAMU football coach held his first of seven summer football skills camps Saturday. On Saturday, June 1, Simmons hosted "the Willie Simmons Elite Prospect Camp" was for rising high school freshmen through seniors and junior college athletes. This past week, Simmons and his staff hosted a four day "Junior Rattler" skills camp for about 35 area elementary and middle school students who got training on technique and fundamentals.
The camps give Coach Simmons and the FAMU staff an opportunity to teach skills as well as evaluate talent.
"Summertime is a huge time for high school athletes to showcase their abilities to various colleges and universities across the country," Simmons said. "We want to make sure we give our local and beyond prospective athletes an opportunity to work out for us."
FAMU's coaches will monitor the activities. They'll provide hands-on teaching with the high school kids. This includes throwing mechanics, running drills, blocking schemes, defensive coverage.
