The FAMU Cooperative Extension Program has partnered with Jacob Chapel Baptist Church, on Tallahassee’s southside to plant a community garden that will produce about 1,000 pounds of vegetables every year as part of an effort to fight food insecurity.
The new garden could feed up to 100 families in the underserved communities surrounding the church.
Community gardens like the one at Jacob Chapel help provide access to healthy produce, and give residents of the church and Tallahassee’s southside community a better understanding of how easy it is to grow in small spaces.
The garden will harvest okra, tomatoes, zucchini and much more. The project comes at a time when food insecurity has been exacerbated by the pandemic. The pandemic increased the number of people seeking food assistance by 50%.
