The FAMU volleyball team nearly swept all major SWAC postseason honors in the team's first season in the league Rattlers placed four members of the six categories.
"We are thrilled to have Dominique, Irem, and Jessa receiving the individual honors as well as Jasmine being selected as Second Team All-Conference," said head coach Gokhan Yilmaz. "This is the ultimate compliment to our recruiting and training. Volleyball is a team sport, and we have several other players who helped our group during the season. We also had some players missing time due to various reasons.”
"We will celebrate the accomplishments of these young ladies and turn our focus to the SWAC Championship."
Dominique Washington - Player of the Year/Newcomer of the Year/SWAC First Team
Washington was one of the best offensive players in the nation as she finished the season ranked 3rd in the NCAA in total kills (489) and 5th in points (539.5). Washington leads the SWAC in attacks per set, kills per set points, points per set, total attacks, and total kills. Washington also ranks 5th in total digs in the conference. Washington earned SWAC Weekly honors ten times during this past season.
Irem Ucar - Setter of the Year/SWAC First Team
Ucar has been the top setter in the league, ranking 1st in assists (1020) and assists per game (10.5 apg). She also ranks nationally in both those categories as well as she ranks 32nd in total assists and 38th in assists per set. Ucar also has the 5th most service aces per set in the conference. She earned SWAC Weekly honors eight times this past season.
Jessa Long - Libero of the Year/SWAC First Team
Long solidified herself as one of the best defensive players in the conference and one of the best in the nation with her stellar play this season. She ranks 1st in the conference in digs per set with 5.22, which is also good for 18th in the nation. Long had a season-high of 32 digs in a 3-2 upset at Auburn and ranked 2nd in the conference with 407 total digs. She earned SWAC Weekly honors three times this past season.
Jasmine Robinson - SWAC Second Team
Jasmine Robinson had an impressive freshman campaign finishing fourth on the team in points with 156 and tied for 8th in the conference with 2.86 points per set. Robinson also finished second on the team with 2.25 kills per set and posted a single-game high of 25 kills in a 3-2 win versus Texas Southern. Robinson was also named SWAC Newcomer of the Week once.
The Rattlers open up the SWAC Championship quarterfinals this evening at 7:30 p.m. EST as the number 2-seed against 7th seed Prairie View A&M. The Rattlers defeated Prairie View A&M 3-0 earlier in the season.
