Fans waited two years for the Florida Classic to return — last year's contest was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic — and it took less than five minutes for both teams to get on the scoreboard.

"Bethune was on a nine-year win streak. We came in and beat them," FAMU defensive back B.J Bohler said. "You know what they say? A cat only has nine lives."

Bohler had a first-half interception that led to an eventual touchdown, and in the third quarter he stripped a Bethune-Cookman receiver, recovered the ball and returned it 56 yards for a touchdown

FAMU was backed by 473 yards of total offense and four forced turnovers, the Rattlers (9-2, 7-1 SWAC) ended their Florida Classic drought with a 46-21 victory over the Wildcats (2-9, 2-6) at Camping World Stadium on Saturday.

"It was nine tough years," FAMU head coach Willie Simmons said. "Very excited for this program and university. These guys knew what was at stake, and they came out tonight and played Rattler football and we are proud of them."

Holding a 13-7 halftime lead, the Rattlers came out of the locker room on a mission to seal the deal as soon as possible.

By the end of the third quarter, they held a 43-7 lead — thanks to three turnovers. FAMU put up 30 unanswered points and turned a competitive game into a blowout.

FAMU, riding its own eight-game winning streak, awaits Sunday’s FCS playoff pairings, which will be announced beginning at 12:30 p.m. on ESPNU.
