The FAMU Rattlers got their sixth straight win by beating the Southern Jaguars 29-17 in Baton Rouge. The Rattlers improved to 7-2 on the season, 5-1 in the SWAC. Southern fell to 4-5 and 3-3 in the conference before a crowd of 15, 665 in AW Mumford Stadium.
The first half wasn’t pretty, but the Rattlers did what needed to be done to go up 20-17 at the half.
In the second half, the Rattler defense held the Jaguars scoreless while the FAMU offense added nine more points.
Quarterback Rasean McKay threw for 238 yards and two touchdowns, with no interceptions. FAMU amassed 150 rushing.
"It was a good win, and it's always tough to win on the road," said head coach Willie Simmons. "Mumford Stadium is one of the toughest stadiums to play in the SWAC.
"First half we went toe-to-toe, and at halftime, the defensive staff did a great job of making adjustments to shut them out in the second half. Offensively, we were able to do enough.
The Rattlers also held them to 61 total yards in the 2nd half (43 in third, 18 in fourth), which was the sixth time the FAMU held their opponent to less than 100 yards in a half.
The Rattlers hit the road again next week as they play Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday, November 13 at 3 p.m EST.
