The FAMU School of the Environment, which recently hosted its 4th International Energy Water Food Nexus Summit, envisions repurposing the former FAMU (DRS) High School gymnasium into an expo and conference center.   The gym has sat vacant on the northeast corner of the campus deteriorating since 2008 when FAMU High moved to its new campus off Orange Avenue.

The old FAMU DRS gym, which was one of the newer structures on the old DRS campus, in recent years has served as a storage facility.  The reimagined building would be opened up allow more natural sunlight in through the side walls and through the installation of a glass/green roof panels.

It would also include an auditorium, water treatment showcase, aeroponics space, energy lab, bio refinery, a "plant and food factory" and indoor urban farm.

No budget or construction timeline has been set for the renovation.
