James Aaron Turk Sr. and Rosemarie "Rose" King Turk celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary last Saturday in Gainesville, FL. The couple met at FAMU in the summer of 1963 during orientation.

"If I had not gone to the university early and if she didn't go to the orientation and went to the freshman ball, we probably would've never met," James said. "We were in a place and time we normally wouldn't be at."

Rose said marriage is all about sacrifice and honoring your vows to stay together.
"You must work at it," she said. "It takes communication. You must be respectful and make sure God is a part of that union."

Rose graduated from FAMU with a bachelor's degree in elementary education and James graduated from FAMU with a bachelor's degree in business education. She taught at Stephen Foster Elementary School for over 30 years and he worked at the U.S. Department of Agriculture's satellite office in Gainesville for almost 40 years.

The couple moved to Gainesville after they got married on June 25, 1967, in St. Augustine.
