A team of 10 graduate and 12 undergraduate students from the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering were selected by NASA to compete in the NASA 2022 Big Idea Challenge. The students will design a four-legged lunar rover robot which one day might walk, craw or roll on the moon.
The Big Idea Challenge supports NASA’s upcoming Artemis missions to establish a human presence on the moon. It also provides students the opportunity to design and develop robotic systems that meet the unique challenges of the lunar surface.
The robot proposed by the FAMU-FSU team is an extreme terrain quadruped that has legs that allow it to climb, swim and traverse a variety of terrains. The robot will be able to complete missions that are dangerous or impossible for traditional wheeled rovers.
The teams has been working over the summer to complete and test its robot and will present the completed product to NASA in Pasadena, CA, in November.
