On Friday, Bragg Stadium's new press box, a major piece of the $8 million renovation of the west stands, was installed in a matter of hours. Crews from Allstate Construction began the installation process around 6:00AM by hoisting the six modular units into the air, by crane, and connecting the units into place.
By the end of the day, the units had been firmly connected to the stadium platform, and the power in most operational.
The new press box replaces the old stadium press box which had been in place for 68-years. In addition to new work spaces for media, announcer, scoreboard control room, the new press box will have a larger athletic director's suite, president’s suite, and a visiting AD's suite. It will have more restrooms, and updated technology equipment. To accommodate more guests the president’s box will extend out into the top three rows of the of the stadium.
The renovation of Bragg Stadium's west stands is a part of a two-year $12 million renovation of the entire stadium made possible by a $10 million grant from the City of Tallahassee and Leon County's Blueprint Intergovernmental Agency to make critical construction repairs and improvements to the stadium. Most of the construction on the stadium has focused on maintaining the structure and repairing "life, health, and safety" issues.
FAMU kicked-in $2 million, to replace the press box, which engineers had ruled was structurally unsound and could not be used beyond last year because of rust.
Here's a short video of the entire press box installation process from arrival to installation. Construction on the stadium is running slightly ahead of schedule, all work is expected to be completed in time for the Rattlers first home football game on September 10th.
