The bust of longtime FAMU assistant football coaches Bobby Lang and Robert Mungen was recently added to the Jake Gaither statute in front of the Gaither Athletic Center.  Lang and Mungen were two long-time Gaither assistants.

The Gaither statue was the brainchild of the FAMU Sports Hall of Fame football player Rudy Givens, and the National “F” Club, who raised money to build it.  The statue was designed by former FAMU Art Professor Chester Williams was constructed in 2001, with bust of some of prominent Gaither assistants added in 2002.

The addition of Lang and Mungen is believed to be the final missing pieces to the Gaither statue as it now surrounded by supporting assistant coaches.

Lang, who died in 2022, was the last remaining coach from the Jake Gaither era when the Rattlers dominated Black college football.  He  and Mungen also coached football alongside Rudy Hubbard in 1978 when the Rattlers won the inaugural 1-AA (now FCS) national championship.

Mungen, passed away in 2003.   Lang and Mungen were not only great football coaches, but great molders  of men and women.  Both coaches served in multiple capacities at FAMU pulling duty as professors of health and physical education. Lang also served as the men’s and women’s track coach, while Mungen was also the head tennis coach.
