James Spady, FAMU football’s associate head coach/tight ends coach, has been nominated for the 2022 Capital One Orange Bowl-FWAA Courage Award.
Spady, suffered a medical episode that caused him to temporarily lose his vision during the Rattler’s season opener football game on August 27th in North Carolina. He spent nine days in the hospital before returning home to Tallahassee.
"Football is my passion. Coaching is my passion," Spady told The Tallahassee Democrat earlier this season. "The goal all along has been to put myself back in position to get back to my normal life to mentor young men and compete."
The 56-year-old Spady, returned to the Rattler football team’s sidelines last week during practice.
The Capital One Orange Bowl Courage Award is given annually to a player, coach or support person in college football who displays courage, on or off the field. The award was created by ESPN The Magazine's senior writer Gene Wojciechowski, a member of the Football Writers Association of America.
