After tumultuous week brought on by Hurricane Ian and the early closure of campus, the FAMU Rattler football team was able to keep their composure Saturday and defeat the visiting Delta Devils of Mississippi Valley State University 34-7 in Bragg Stadium. The win helped the Rattlers improve to 3-2 (2-1 SWAC) on the season, while dropping MVSU to 0-5. The win also extended the Rattlers home winning streak to 13 games, the second longest in FCS football.
The Rattler offense passed for 301 yards and gained another 107 on the ground.
"The defense played extremely well, special teams did some really good things," said head coach Willie Simmons."Offensively, we struggled at times, and didn't take advantage of a lot of situations. I really challenged the guys at halftime to be the offense that we are capable of being."
The Rattlers struck first with a touchdown pass to Xavier Smith within the first five minutes of the game.
Shortly after, the Delta Devils got on the board with an 83-yard touchdown reception to Cobie Bates to tie the game 7-7.
The Rattlers scored again on a one-yard touchdown by running back Terrell Jennings capping a 6 play-53 yard scoring with 10:23 remaining in the second quarter.
The defense remained persistent and kept the Delta Devils for scoring for the remainder of the game.
