Researchers from the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering are kicking off a new project to help clean up Florida’s ecosystem, one lake at a time.
Nasrin Alamdari, an assistant professor at the College of Engineering, is leading the charge to fight harmful algae known as cyanobacteria from freshwater lakes in the area.
According to the National Center for Biotechnology, these toxic blooms affect the growth and development of fish and plants.
Alamdari wants to keep the algae from coming back. Her team is developing a tool that can predict when and where the next algae outbreak may occur.
Alamdari’s project is slated to be complete by the beginning of next year if her team can secure $338,575 in funding from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. The proposal is currently under evaluation by the state.
