In an exhilarating showdown at Veronica Wiggins Field, the FAMU Rattlers clinched a commanding victory over the Jackson State Tigers in game one of their three-game home series yesterday, emerging triumphant with a 2-0 win.
Fueling the Rattlers' success was freshman pitching sensation Zoryana Hughes, who dazzled on the mound with a masterful two-hit shutout performance. Hughes' stellar outing not only secured the win but also propelled FAMU to an impressive 17-16 overall record, maintaining their first-place SWAC-East standing with a 13-3 record.
While Hughes dominated from the pitcher's circle, FAMU's offense was equally impressive, led by senior standout Nyomi Jones. Jones delivered a stellar performance at the plate, going 2-for-3 on the day, including a crucial triple and an RBI that proved instrumental in securing the victory. Junior Samantha Smith also showcased her prowess, contributing a notable 2-for-3 performance with a double and an RBI of her own.
Adding to the offensive firepower was junior Kiauna Watson, who made her presence felt with a solid hit in three plate appearances, including a triple that helped bolster FAMU's offensive arsenal.
With momentum firmly on their side, the Rattlers are poised to continue their winning ways as they prepare to closeout the series with a doubleheader showdown against the Tigers today at Veronica Wiggins Field.
