T
he FAMU softball team is basking in the glow of individual accolades as they prepare for the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Tournament. Led by standout freshman Zoryana Hughes, the Rattlers are poised to make a statement both on and off the field.

In a resounding testament to their talent and dedication, FAMU saw four of its own clinch prestigious individual awards. Freshman sensation Hughes emerged as a dual threat, clinching the titles of Pitcher and Co-Freshman of the Year. Joining her in the limelight was newcomer Samantha Smith, who was rightfully crowned Newcomer of the Year. Head Coach Camise Patterson, in just her second year at the helm, was honored as Co-Coach of the Year, a testament to her leadership and guidance.

But the Rattlers' dominance didn't stop there. With five players securing spots on the All-SWAC team, FAMU stood shoulder to shoulder with Prairie View, both boasting the highest representation in the conference. Among the luminaries were Amaya Gainer and Zoryana Hughes, both securing first-team honors for their exemplary performances at shortstop and pitcher, respectively. Nyah Morgan, Brianna Duggins, and Mia Blasingane rounded out the impressive lineup, earning spots on the second team.

Now, as they gear up for the SWAC Tournament, in Gulfport, MS, FAMU finds itself in unfamiliar yet exhilarating territory.  Coming in as the SWAC East Champs, and a No. 1 see, with a commendable 23-18 record, the Rattlers are set to clash with the fourth-seeded Arkansas-Pine Bluff on this afternoon at 4:30 p.m. Eastern Time.

A victory today would not only secure their first-ever SWAC Tournament win but help to advance them towards their ultimate goal --- winning the SWAC Tournament crown.

With the tournament's conclusion looming on Friday or Saturday, the Rattlers are keenly aware that a triumph here would mark a monumental milestone, securing their maiden SWAC title. But the significance doesn't end there.

The winner of the SWAC Tournament earns an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
