FAMU Marching 100 and alumni honor Dr. Shaylor L. James for 60 years of service

In a historic and emotional ceremony, the members of the FAMU Marching 100 and Marching 100 Alumni gathered recently to salute Shaylor L. James, Ph.D., the Director of Percussion, and the Percussion Ensemble on 60 years of stellar service and employment at FAMU. 

James, is believed to, now hold the distinction of being the longest-serving tenured professor in FAMU history.

The event, held at the AC Hotel, was a testament to Dr. James's impact on the university, the community, and the countless lives he has touched through his passion for music and education.  

Dr. James began his career at FAMU in 1963, fresh out of college. His journey started as a young percussionist with the Marching 100, and his talent and dedication quickly propelled him to become the Director of Percussion. Under his leadership, the Percussion Ensemble has achieved national and international acclaim, setting a standard for excellence in music education and performance.

The celebration included performances by the Marching 100, the Percussion Ensemble, and various musical groups, all paying tribute to Dr. James's contributions. The highlight of the event was a heartfelt speech by Dr. James, who reflected on his journey, the evolution of the music program, and the importance of mentorship and education.

"To see the generations of students I've had the privilege to teach, now standing before me, is the greatest reward a teacher could ask for," James said, visibly moved. "Music is a universal language, and it's been my life's work to ensure that language is spoken with excellence and passion."

Dr. James was praised for his unwavering commitment to the university and its students. "Dr. James is more than a professor; he is a mentor, a role model, and a cornerstone of our community. His 60 years of service are a testament to his dedication and love for FAMU, the Marching 100, and all mankind. We are honored to celebrate this milestone with him."
