SWAC Coaches and SIDs pick FAMU to finish second in SWAC East

The FAMU Rattlers, reigning HBCU National Champions and Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Champions, have been selected to finish in second place in the SWAC East Division for the upcoming season. This prediction was made during the SWAC football media day, where conference coaches and sports information directors cast their votes. The Rattlers received a total of 104 points, trailing only Alabama State, which secured 114 points in the voting.

The Rattlers also had seven of players have been named to the preseason All-SWAC teams. This impressive showing underscores the team's strength and depth heading into the new season.

Leading the charge on the All-SWAC First Team are defensive back Kendall Bohler and kicker Cameron Gillis, both of whom were first-team selections in 2023. Bohler's exceptional skills in the defensive backfield and Gillis's reliability as a kicker make them key players for the Rattlers.

Joining Bohler on the First Team is fellow defensive back Deco Wilson, whose contributions to the team's defensive prowess are invaluable. Additionally, offensive lineman Ashton Grable has been promoted to the first team after a notable performance in 2023, where he was named to the second team.

The Preseason All-SWAC Second Team includes Celebration Bowl Offensive MVP Kelvin Dean Jr. and wide receiver Jamari Gassett. Dean Jr.'s exceptional performance in the Celebration Bowl has solidified his status as a key offensive player, while Gassett's versatility and skill as a wide receiver and return specialist have earned him a spot on the second team.

Also making the Second Team is Allen Smith Jr., who will be a crucial player on the defensive side of the ball. Gassett's dual role as a wide receiver and return specialist highlights his importance to the team's offensive and special teams strategies.

The Rattlers are poised for another successful season, with a strong foundation of talent and experience. The preseason honors for these seven players are a testament to their hard work and dedication, and they will undoubtedly play a significant role in the team's quest to defend their titles.

As the season approaches, the FAMU Rattlers are focused and ready to showcase their skills on the field.

The Rattlers first football game is August 24, against Norfolk State University in Atlanta, GA, in the SWAC/MEAC Challenge.
