Kenyana McCray and Gabrielle Sinclair have been selected as 2024 White House Initiative HBCU Scholars. This prestigious honor recognizes their dedication to excellence and their significant contributions to their communities.

McCray, is a 2024 Business Administration graduate from Jacksonville, Florida.  While Sinclair, is a Phycology major from Miami.   Both were chosen for their exceptional academic achievements and their commitment to making a positive impact.

The HBCU Scholars program, now in its tenth year, is a celebration of the academic talent and achievements of students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona emphasized the importance of recognizing Black excellence and the contributions of HBCUs to higher education.

"This year's 110 outstanding students exemplify Black excellence – and fill us with hope for the promise of tomorrow. We couldn't be prouder to support them on their journey," said Secretary Cardona.

The 2024 cohort of HBCU Scholars represents a diverse group of students from 23 states and 11 countries, selected from a competitive pool of over 350 applicants. These scholars hail from various disciplines, including science, technology, engineering, math, humanities, social sciences, and the arts. Their selection is a testament to their academic excellence and their strong commitment to service and leadership.

Throughout the year, the HBCU Scholars will participate in workshops, leadership development programs, and networking events designed to enhance their skills and expand their horizons. They will also have the opportunity to connect with industry leaders, policymakers, and alumni of the program, further enriching their educational experience.

A unique aspect of the HBCU Scholar Program is its partnership with NASA, which fosters innovation and opportunity for the cohorts. Through the Mini MITTIC program, HBCU Scholars will collaborate to develop ideas to commercialize technology derived from NASA intellectual property, aiming to improve their campuses and surrounding communities.

FAMU's McCray and Sinclair are poised to make significant contributions to their fields and communities. Their selection as HBCU Scholars is a reflection of their hard work, dedication, and the support of their university. As they embark on this prestigious journey, they carry with them the pride of FAMU and the legacy of HBCUs.
