Just weeks before reconvening for a highly anticipated new season, FAMU’s famed Marching 100 is still basking in the afterglow of its latest triumph. The reigning ESPN Band of the Year champions unveiled their 2024 "Band of the Year" championship rings over the weekend, sparking a wave of pride across social media as members showcased the gleaming symbols of their historic season. Each member of the band, and the band staff, received a commemorative ring embossed with their names on it.
Band Director Shelby Chipman hailed the rings as a testament to the ensemble’s relentless dedication. “This Band of the Year Championship ring represents the commitment, determination, and sacrifice of every member who delivered another world-class title for FAMU fans everywhere,” Chipman said. “From training camp to our victory in Atlanta, this band was deeply focused and connected. Our students, staff, and directors worked tirelessly to bring home that trophy. This ring will forever remind us of the magic we created in 2024.”
The rings not only honor last season’s achievements but also marked a ceremonial pivot to the future.
In just a few weeks, the Marching 100 will kick off training camp ahead of a star-studded August lineup. Highlights include a groundbreaking performance at the US Open Tennis Tournament’s Center Court, where they’ll honor trailblazing alumna Althea Gibson, the first Black athlete to win a Grand Slam title. The band will then head to the National Battle of the Bands in Houston and the Orange Blossom Classic in Miami, setting the stage for another championship quest.
With fresh momentum, the Marching 100 aims to add more hardware to its legacy. As one drum band member put it, “This ring isn’t the end—it’s fuel for what’s next.” Fans won’t have to wait long to see if that fire translates into another title-winning season.
