Beyond the vibrant pageantry of the famed Marching 100 band, FAMU is building a quieter, though no less significant, reputation for academic excellence. Recent national rankings have spotlighted the strength of its individual colleges, with several programs now positioned among the nation's elite.

FAMU's Criminal Justice program ranks among nation's Top 10
In Niche's 2026 college rankings, released last fall, FAMU's specialized programs demonstrated remarkable competitiveness. The College of Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities (CSSAH) led the charge, with is Criminal Justice program breaking in the nation's Top 10, achieving a No. 10 national ranking out of 706 programs.  "This is a true testament of our programs rigor, coursework, and strong connections to law enforcement and legal agencies," said Dean Valencia Mathews. CSSAH's Performing Arts program also had a strong showing finishing at #104 in the nation.

The program outperformed numerous larger, more endowed universities, a point of pride for faculty and students who link the success to a hands-on, industry-focused curriculum.

Several programs finished among the Top 50
Underscoring the institution's growing academic influence across a range of disciplines. The School of Journalism & Graphic Communication's Design program broke into the national Top 50, ranking No. 48 among 454 institutions. The College of Agriculture and Food Sciences ranked No. 49 among 157 programs nationwide, while the FAMU's Architecture program placed No. 54 out of 171 institutions.

"FAMU's results point to a breadth of academic strength that has emerged despite the financial and structural challenges that have historically confronted the university, and Historically Black Colleges and Universities across the nation," said Evelyn Porter,Ph.D. a professor of higher education policy at Emory University.

For prospective students like Maya Andrews, a rising senior at Oak Ridge High School, in Orlando, considering architecture, such data points are pivotal. “Seeing FAMU on a list with so many well-known programs made me look closer,” she said. “It tells me the education will be competitive and respected when I’m looking for a job.”

While these program-specific accolades are noteworthy, they feed into a larger narrative of institutional ascent. Niche also ranked FAMU as the No. 1 HBCU in the country and the No. 191 overall best college in America.

“Excellence is not monolithic. It is built department by department, lab by lab, studio by studio,” said Allyson Watson, Ph.D., Provost and VP for Academic Affairs. “The success of these individual programs validates our focused investments and proves that our students are receiving an education that stands shoulder-to-shoulder with any in the nation.”

"Our goal is clear: to be recognized not only for its vital cultural legacy but as a first-choice destination for students seeking a top-tier, career-ready education in a uniquely supportive environment. The latest rankings suggest that effort is firmly on course," Watson added.
