- FAMU had an iconic look: Burnt orange, dark green, white road uniforms and the signature snake-head helmet established a distinctive brand.
- Recent changes have drawn criticism: Fans have questioned the script helmet, jersey accents and Orange Blossom Classic throwbacks.
- Modernization shouldn’t mean reinvention: FAMU can experiment without sacrificing the tradition that makes its uniforms recognizable.
Never really thought we’d have to talk about this, but here we are.
Over the years, FAMU football had established one of the best looks in all of FCS football. The burnt orange, dark green, white road uniforms and iconic snake-head helmet created a combination that was unmistakably FAMU.
But recent changes have fans wondering whether those in charge of the Rattlers uniforms/equipment are fixing something that was never broken.
“The script is hideous. The snake is iconic. WE WANT THE SNAKE back,” one fan wrote on social media.
The frustration is understandable. The snake is more than a logo; it is a defining symbol of FAMU athletics. Replacing it risks weakening an identity the program spent years establishing.
There has also been speculation that the team’s recent helmet appearance reflects equipment choices, with one observer suggesting FAMU may have used glossy orange Gameday Skinz over white helmet shells instead of its traditional satin-orange shells. Whatever, the thinking is it is an "insane downgrade."
Regardless of the reasoning, the larger issue is consistency.
As one fan put it, “We have a program with a rich enough history to have a consistent look that’s easily recognizable.”
That history should be the foundation for evolution, not a casualty of it. Modernization should elevate what makes FAMU distinctive, not replace the iconic snake-head helmet with a script that could belong to any program. There is room for creativity, alternate looks and special-edition uniforms, but the core identity should remain unmistakably FAMU.
The formula is simple: Honor the tradition. Refine the look. Protect the brand. Bring back the snake.
The strongest brands don’t abandon what makes them iconic. They build on it.

restore the strike. restore the snake on the helmet!
