Morris Brown in the Making?

The headlines from around the nation continue to roll in and they don't look good. This morning there are forty six stories, count them, about Castell & Co.'s latest self-inflicted wound. See: FAMU in the News It didn't have to be this way, but as grandma is fond of saying a "hard head makes a soft behind".

Mrs. Bryant's bull headedness is clearly steering FAMU's ship straight into an iceberg, all the while University trustees continue to bury their heads into the sand.

Back in October, Castell & Co. were beating their chest about an $8 million surplus. By January FAMU officials has begun suggesting that the surplus has already shrunk to $5 million and last month, after shifting through FAMU's fuzzy math it appeared FAMU' had "positive assets" of $2.7 million (which is down by $27 million from the previous year). See: The Incredible Shrinking Surplus

This morning's Tallahassee Democrat editorial was equally as harsh Losing Control as was the one by Inside Higher Education Turmoil in Tallahassee

In other news...
FAMU's October 14th home football game with S.C. State has been moved to Thursday, Oct. 12th and will be televised by ESPNU, athletic director Nelson Townsend confirmed Wednesday.

  2. Castell & Co. are following the script she learned at Miami Dade:
    1. Create an imaginary crisis.
    2. Fire your enemies under the guise of solving the crisis.
    3. Declare the crisis over.
    4. Give raises to your friends.
    5. Accept praise as the great savior.
    (Read the script at www.AAUP.org

Stop and think...does Jeb want to be president someday? Would "Wun Florida" be a success, if only black enrollment at state universities would go up? Would closing FAMU make Florida's other universities showplaces of diversity (assuming, incorrectly, that all FAMUans would transfer somewhere in state)?

Could it be that Gainous refused to follow the script, so he was fired? Suppose Jeb plans for Castell & Co. to f$%# everything up so badly that SACS comes down hard on the University and, with "deep sorrow" (and lots of hand-wringing) Jeb splits us up between (remember Gainous) TCC and (former Republican politico at the helm) FSU. Sadly, this scenario is not at all far-fetched. Be vigilant, Rattlers. We need to end this disaster S O O N ! ! ! !

  5. I'd like to know if I'm the only person who thinks this, or if others agree:

Pres. Bryant announces herself as a straight shooter who says what she means.

But when she answers questions from faculty, you often can't understand what her answer means. It is very hard to get a straight answer out of her.

She slips into bureaucratic-speak whenever that serves. And she slips into Black slang whenever that serves. And both serve to avoid making clear, appropriate answers to specific questions.

  6. At the ribbon cutting ceremony CB warned the students and faculty that they would be involved at the law school. What happened to that promise?

  7. Is FAMU destined to become the Dollar Generals of universities? How much more of this ignorance can we take? Just when you thought it could not get any worst it does.

  8. Word on the street is that the environment at FAMU is one of paranoia and fear. Timelines are not being met, contracts and checks are late, and students are considering transfer options. Faculty and staff are afraid to use e-mail and RN has become the source for all information concerning the law school.

  9. You've got that right! The place is a mess! Everyone's keeping one eye on their back and the other on the door. The arrogance of the Lee Hall administrators is unbelieveable, faculty morale is sinking daily, and nobody outside seems to be taking notice.
