FAMU graduate Melanie Roussell, press secretary, to U.S. Rep. William Jefferson (D-La.) was named one of the 50 most beautiful people on Capitol Hill. Melanie was born in Flint, Mich., but raised primarily in New Orleans. Her favorite pastimes include going to the movies, watching movies and finding movies that have nothing to do with politics. "I like politics from 9 a.m. to the last vote Monday through Friday," she says.

Roussell, 27, has been working as Jefferson's spokeswoman for the past year, she has risen through the ranks starting out on the Hill as an intern.

Another Rattler, Whitney Warrick, scheduler to U.S. Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) was also selected among the 50 most beautiful. Whitney was born in San Antonio and has lived in Los Angeles and raised in Washington, D.C. Prior to joining Rep. Green, Warrick worked as an aide to U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Texas).

Both Melanie & Whitney were selected by a panel of judges for The Hill newspaper. They were choosen from a pool of more than 13,000 Congressional employees, Members of Congress, and lobbyist. Of the 50 most beautiful, only five were black.

(thanks to our Washington readers for the tip.)

  1. Ok, so these young women are very lovely darlings. WTF does that have to do with anything? I bet if they were "locked & dark," they would not have garnered a second glance. Who the fuck cares? I would much rather be noted on the Hill for having some major shit going on than for being fucking pretty. Get the fuck out. Who the F gives a goddamn?

  2. And anothing thing, I ain' playa hatin'. It's just that this beauty myth is tired and old shit. Get the fuck out. This some bullshit.

  4. We need more articles like this. Put them in the FAMU recruitment packett along with a little info about the "ratio." We'll see black male enrollment climb sky high.

  6. Anonymous @ 11:33, this is what makes the FAMU experience unique. Fine, intelligent sisters in all shapes, sizes, complexions, and backgrounds.

Thanks Da Rattler. This is definitely the type of positive vibes we need about our alma mater.

    Keep up the good work.

  7. Ain' nobody pissed in my coffee. The young ladies are very attractive. No doubt. But what's the point? Now, there's someone who wants to use the ladies' photos as "recruitment" tools for future Rattlers. Is that sexist or what? I still say, what's the goddamn point of "the most beautiful on Capitol Hill" shit anyway? Give me a strong sister like Cynthia McKinney (hairstyle & all) or someone who's not in a sexy pose with a flirtatious smile, and I'll give props proper. Until that time, Good Looking Out.

  8. Damn, RN's putting out some positive vibes on what's happening with FAMUans. How about you do YOUR version of the most beautiful people on Capitol Hill? Otherwise, STFU.

  9. Posted on another MB ...

"Now you know where that missing 10 G's went!"

    But seriously ...

With all the negative BS being spun out here, anything positive about FAMU can't hurt right now.

The fact that we have the two FAMUans working up there in these capacities PERIOD should be an article worthy of A&M Magazine. Granted, their looks don't hurt, but their BRAINS and ABILITY is likely what got them where they are.

  10. I wonder if the people criticizing this post are the same ones who accuse RN of only publishing negative news about FAMU.

RN publishes more positive news about FAMU than www.famu.edu.

  11. if you can't give someone credit where it's due, then keep your negative comments to yourself. these two sistas, i'm sure, are considered beautiful for their brains and what they have accomplished, not their looks. plus, there were only five blacks as it is, so stop hatin'.

Thank you for your comments. It is nice to read positive articles about young alumni. Even greater to realize that FAMUans are being recognized on the Hill. Kudos to RN.

  13. Everyone here is supportive of the sistas. Hey, I am, too. Don't get a sista wrong. I still say, however, if these two sistahGirls were, say, dreadlocked with beautiful midnight-colored hues, they would not have been nominated in the First Place, no matter how damn smart, intelligent, and or whatever they were. You know it and I know it. Yes, FAMU could stand some real positive props right about now, but I still say, this "most beautiful" shit just ain about it. Y'all know I'm telling the truth, 'cause every damn one of y'all Anonymous mfs ain' even touched this subject, which says to me, y'all some shallow-assed mfs. Not one of y'all, not one, has thus far even addressed these comments. Show me some talented and gorgeous sistahs like Badu, Arie, Chapman, and a host of others, then you might have a legitimate argument. Until then, all y'all mfs need to STFU. 'Cause if y'all ain' gone keep shit real here on the RN, then y'all shit stank just like all the other mfs. Let me recommend a book for all y'all shallow, non-readers: "Don't Play in the Sun: A Black Woman's Journey Through the Color Complex" by Marita Golden. In case any of you want to read it--which I doubt--you can find it in any reputable bookstore. That's a store that sells books, in case some of y'all didn't know, which I presume many of you don't and/or have never step foot in. By the way--and not that any of you asked, but probably assumed just the opposite--I'm a bit older than the sisters pictures, but have the looks, hair, and, here we go---the hue---of them both. But the shit don't matter. I have a professional gig, and just wish everyone would get off that " most beautiful thing." Damn, this some 60s shit. By the way, I'm 32, have a master's in pub. admin and have, on the side, my own consulting firm (plus a whole lot of other shit going on). So I ain' even playa hatin'. Just calling shit like I sees it. Sort of like what y'all mfs oughts to be doing. I'm through w/this shit. Good Lookin' Out.

I didn't realize Badu, Arie, and Chapman worked on Capital Hill. The article is about people who work on Capital Hill. Now if you know of any FAMUans working in the House or Senate, please recognize them by sending their info to RN. Otherwise, you STFU or better yet send your picture in.

Damn, you people make an issue out of every DAMN thing.

  15. Well if you all want to see who all made the list you can go to www.thehill.com and search for "50 Most Beautiful". I went on the site and I found that among the only 5 African Americans on the site there are two that are of darker complexion if that was what some were worried about. I think that it is a good thing that these two rattlers are among the top 50 and I think they should be recognized. Being able to have a job on Capitol Hill is a very big thing and both young ladies have been featured in The Hill newspaper on many separate occasions before this one and both of the ladies are memeber of greek organizations the focus on service. I think it's best to check your sources before speaking on things, because after reading these comments I did.
