Reporting live from cyberspace, the BOT may have whittled the list down to six. One FAMUan is out.

James H. Ammons, president, North Carolina Central University, Durham, N.C. (FAMU graduate)

Lawrence F. Davenport, executive vice president for university advancement and executive director, FAU Foundation, Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton

Howard C. Johnson, provost and vice president for academic affairs, University of North Texas, Denton, Texas

Larry L. Palmer, president and CEO, The Inter-American Foundation, Arlington, Va.

Patricia Pierce Ramsey, provost and vice president for academic affairs, Bowie State University, Bowie, Md.

Thelma B. Thompson, president, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Princess Anne, Md.

The six candidates will be interviewed in person next week by the search committee, which then will shrink the prospective presidents list to three people.

  1. They are:

    * James Ammons, North Carolina Central University president and former FAMU provost.

    * Lawrence Davenport, Florida Atlantic University executive vice president for university advancement and FAU Foundation executive director.

    * Howard Johnson, University of North Texas provost and vice president for academic affairs.

    * Larry Palmer, The Inter-American Foundation president and CEO, and former U.S. ambassador to Honduras.

    * Patricia Pierce Ramsey, Bowie State University provost and vice president for academic affairs.

    * Thelma Thompson, University of Maryland Eastern Shore president

The search committee, headed by the Rev. R.B. Holmes Jr. and Laura Branker, both FAMU trustees, made the decision on possible presidents with input from board of trustees Chairwoman Challis Lowe.

  2. Nelson and Castell are lobbying for Thelma Thompson. This should tell you something. Although we at UMES would love to see her gone, we would not wish this nightmare on anyone other HBCU. Besides she has applied for jobs everywhere within the last year, but no gold.

FAMU keep her out of your house.

  3. Thompson, Johnson and Palmer should be "no go's!" If Lowe is lobbying for them that says it all...they should be OUT!

  5. I agree with the (12/7 @ 8:14am) commenter. Why is Challis Lowe lobbying on this committee anyway? But, what better candidate than Ammons: cut from the cloth of Humphries, familiarity with FAMU and the FL legislative culture, and he's doing an outstanding job at NC Central since hitting that campus. I'm sure NC Central would hate to see him go, but he would be the best for FAMU.

I'll say this as maturely as possible:

    His name is Ammons, Yeah
    He should be prez, Yeah
    Rattlers are back, Yeah
    And we don't play, Yeah
now walk it out (walk it out)
