Collateral damage! SGA prez comes under fire

Things took a turn for the worst for outgoing SGA President Phillip Agnew as upset students asked the Student Senate to impreach him for not adequately representing them.

"We need to impeach Philip Agnew for the basis on not doing his job, not informing us on what's going on with the Board of Trustees and administrators, violating state laws, purchasing contracts, and allowing our administration to spend out of control as they have," said Kyle Washington, 20, a physical education student from Tallahassee. "I made a motion for students to stand aside and impeach Phillip Agnew because he's our board and trustee and he's not doing his job."

Agnew said Washington had "no relevance in terms of impeachment."

"The accusations are unfounded and ridiculous," said Agnew, 21, a fourth-year business student from Chicago. "The board is not responsible for day to day operations."

According to The FAMUan: "Agnew said he has done his best to keep students informed on campus and is not responsible for the University's financial problems."

"I understand his anger, and I'm angry too. But I am no way to blame for these issues. I will continue to work for the students as I have this year, and I take issue with his suggestion that I have not," Agnew added.

  4. Come on, seriously do you believe the SGA president can really control the problems that plague FAMU's daily operations??? There's a need for Rattler Nation because FAMU has not had a President. The students would be better served with taking their argument to the Board of Trustees. That's who they should be angry with...not the SGA President. He's one voice on the BOT.

  8. I agree, he may not be responsible for what happens at the university. But he has failed to stand and fight for the interests and well-being of the students. And he has failed to keep students informed because he's been busy promoting himself in the Martin Lee Anderson case, while the campus was steadily falling apart.

  13. If Mr. Agnew has done such a poor job in his administration then why is it at the end of his term "someone" wants to now speak? This young man has spoken on behalf of the students passionately in various arena's and as an alum I take my hat of to ALL of his efforts. He is a voice for FAMU students and was it not the you, the students who followed him and marched for the rights of Martin Lee Anderson?

  14. Phillip has done a good job as SGA president and a BOT member. As mentioned before, he's really tried to work behind the scenes to handle many of the problems that have surfaced during Castell's tenure.

Castell thought Phillip was going to be a "yes-man" when he came on the BOT. He shocked her by flat-out rejecting her pleas for him to vote for Thelma Thompson.

Phillip stood tall with the razor-thin 7-member BOT that supported James Ammons. Phillip's vote for Ammons played an instrumental role in saving FAMU from a fate similiar to Morris Brown. There's no way anyone can state that he's not accuratley representing the student body because the students overwhelmingly supported Ammons (as did the faculty and alumni).

Phillip's a good SGA president who's done the best he could under tough circumstances. Let's concentrate on the real problem here: Castell.

  15. For the record, we happen to believe that Philip Agnew has done a pretty good job and should and will likely not be impeached.

We were just simply reporting the news. We don't make this stuff up.

  16. All i know what Phillip did was Promote Ashley Johnson's campaign team. why would the STUDENT BODY PRESIDENT choose one side of the student body who is representing Ashley Johnson and negate the others who are voting for Sheerie Edwards.....THAT IS NOT A STUDENT BODY PRESIDENT.

  17. It is about time that students learn how to fend for themselves and stop expecting everything to be spoon-fed to them. The information that the students want to know is out there. It is time for them to go out and look for it. I have graduated from FAMU and I still know that the Senate meetings are every Monday night at 6pm and I’ve received emails from the FAMUAN telling when the BOT meetings are. Why is it that a student who appears to be so passionate about his school doesn’t know these things and he’s on that campus everyday?
While I was a student at FAMU, I became very familiar with this Kyle Washington character. He is an attention seeker. This is the same man that I saw parading around campus in a dress(with shaw included) on the way to Lee Hall to convince his peers to vote him for Freshman Senator. This is also the same man who wears majorette gloves to football games and dances like there's no tomorrow so that all eyes will be on him. I think that this is yet another attempt to have his name in people's mouths.
Please, let’s stop giving this man( and his groundless suggestions) the attention that he desires.

  19. 10:21 AM and 1:39 PM -- Instead of Phillip being an advocate for public causes (i.e. Martin Lee Anderson), he should have been speaking out on behalf of the students at Florida A&M University and leading them on a march to protect their interest at the university. Once again I will ask the same question for the supports of Philip, what has he done on behalf of the students??? And pointing out the fact that Phillip held the deciding vote for the election of the next university does not count because as 1:39 PM stated that is what the students that elected Phillip to office wanted, so therefore he had no choice but to vote in accordance to what his constituents wanted.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Listen, Phillip, although young, is an elected student leader and with his title comes a responsibility. The boy receives a check (yes, he does get paid from tuition dollars) to do a job. FAMU and the students didn't elect him to fight for Martin Lee Anderson. They didn't elect him to serve on panels with activist like Bobby Seale and Elaine Brown to offer his uninsightful opinion. They didn't elect him to promote Alpha Phi Alpha, Fraternity, Inc and the Gorilla Thrilla. They didn't elect him to dress up in a damn leprechaun suit and parade on the set. They elected him to fight for the student body. When has he fought for the students? What efforts has he extended to informing the students? How is he responsible for Ammons being president when the vote was 6 to 7? Now we're just going to randomly pick his vote out of the 7 Ammon votes and say his vote got Ammons in? The faculty senate representative makes efforts to keep the faculty informed, why shouldn't Phillip be responsible for informing the students? The boy needs to learn that being a leader isn't about wearing a damn suit and bowtie, and coming out to speak only when the media and cameras are around.

  27. Some of you all are acting just like Castell; blaming others for various situations. Agnew is not to blame for the financial issues occurring at Famu. Also, I know that some of those in SGA work really hard; and just because you don't see something broadcast doesn't mean that work is not being done.

  28. Everyone that supports Phillip is yet to list anything Phillip has done, and never will because they can't. If Phillip's your friend, put aside your relationship with him and objectively ask yourself: What has he done? In my opinion, Castell answers to the BOT. Therefore, they bare a portion of the responsibility for everything that they've sat idly by and watched her do for the last two years. And guess what? Phillip is on the BOT. Did he ever speak out against her in a BOT meeting or otherwise? (and don't tell me he did behind the scenes, because if that was the case, you wouldn't know) What has the boy done as a trustee for the well-being of the students during Castell's pillaging of FAMU? One of his supporters, please answer this!

  30. "My Dear AGNEW"

Nothing less anything more than the truth and your fraternity brothers from the alpha phi alpha chapter of beta nu (No that wasn’t a typo) can take it anyway you want.

Phillip: You have choose to be the most uninformed, uneducated, unprofessional excuse for a leader that I have ever seen since I’ve laid my foot on these seven hills.

Phillip: How dare you play games and try to manipulate these students, have you ever heard of, "What goes around, come around," !!!Oh!!! I forgot you tend to not know where students come from, and for that you choose to consistently spit in the
faces of students trying to better the university.

Phillip: Published today in the "FAMUAN," a student run and highly credible news paper which published an article today where at the 36th student senate meeting March 19, 2007. Mr. Kyle E. Washington called for an action of impeachment against you, for, not informing us on what's going on with the Board of Trustees and administrators, violating state laws, purchasing contracts, and allowing our administration to spend out of control. Mr. Agnew all these claims are very legitimate, and your responses and statements are misleading, and immature lies.

Phillip: You were a fool to say what you did in the
FAMUAN. Let’s dissect your quotes and lay out the facts. In today’s article you stated and quote, Agnew said Washington had "no relevance in terms of impeachment." If you are such the leader why couldn’t you go into details to defend your case, instead of running circles around the question. Your term has been one of dysfunction and hate. Mr. Agnew you have did nothing more but become the male version of Dr. Castell V. Bryant.

Communication under your administration has declined drastically. The Department of Communication was already flawed under the Alexander administration when you served as a lame duck vice president. The mobilization of volunteers under
your term has declined. The Department of Community Affairs is non-existent, and what community service projects have you initiated that have successfully been completed or communicated to the student body…..none. The Department of the Comptroller is a wreck. Your mathematically incompetent comptroller has literally handed the A&S budget for a free for all buffet. Your comptroller can’t account for missing documents under your administration, or the reason why some of your constituents have dipped their hands into the A&S pool, and all you all did is write it off as a business expenditure. I bet you didn’t think I was smart? Huh, Mr. Agnew.

You have really proved to me how incompetent and uncontrolled your administration is, I dare not continue ranting about your administration department by department; their incompetence speaks for its self very
    boldly.

Back to the Famuan article, you also were quoted as saying and I quote ,

"I have done my best to keep all students informed," he said. "I understand his anger, and I'm angry too. But I am no way to blame for these issues. I will continue to work for the students as I have this year, and I take issue with his suggestion that I have not."

My Dear Agnew, don’t ever state that you are not to blame for these issues, when you sit on the governing body of this institution the board of trustees and you are an actual voting representative and as it states in the operating procedures for the Florida A&M University handbook,

"The Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University Board of Trustees is vested with all

powers and the authority to govern and set policy for Florida Agricultural and

Mechanical University, as necessary to provide proper governance in accordance with

laws of the State of Florida and with rules and policies of the Florida Board of

Governors. The Board of Trustees shall hereinafter be referred to as the "Board." In

order to promote the effective discharge of its obligations and achieve its stated
objectives, the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University Board of Trustees hereby

    adopts these Board Operating Procedures."

Which means anything that comes or sets foot on this campus have to come through you all. You also stated that you do your best to inform the student body that’s much a lie as your election platform. Mr. Agnew the only thing you have that you really should be angry for is the fact that you have a illegitimate administration.

    Then there’s the other quote,

"This is an issue far bigger than I, but one that
I have been working best of my ability and my record on the board speaks for itself," Agnew said. "These are problems of the University, but it's not the responsibility of each board member to micro-manage the day-to-day activities or infringe on presidents' rights."

Again I must disagree with you. Phillip you are the student government president, which means that when you attend these BOT meetings you just don’t go with your voice, you go with the students voice.

Phillip you have yet to throw a fact that proved that your board record speaks for itself other than selecting our next president.

Phillip you have consistently lied to the student body of Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, and we are tired of it. You have just as much influence and power to determine where the university’s budget is allocated as Castell, George, and Holmes, do not sit in the face of the students and tell a tall tell, stop hiding behind a skirt.

Tell me this my dear Agnew:

Why does the EXECUTIVE BRANCH have an operating budget of half a million dollars,

But you only would allocate $68,590.97 for homecoming.

Lets talk about the FAMU CONNECTION and how you seem to talk about how much castell cut funding for them, but it
seemed you did the same thing by only allocating to them $15,795.00

Can you explain what these special projects that you have which I have yet to see that you allocated $65,479.50, sounds like a cover up, Oh! Its called an business expenditure.

I’m frustrated to find out that you allocated $21,529.23 to the electoral commission, where did that money go, I guess people really can buy elections.

You have prove to be an unstable man full of flaws, you have wasted our A&S budget on tom-foolery, paying for high scale events that suppose to attract students on a huge scale, but because of the incompetence of your communication department only 800 students come to Gaither Gymnasium. You spend $37,650 dollars on a 3,000-student event and
only pull 800 students. You are a disgrace to this institution.

My Dear Agnew, I know at this point your scrambling around in your corner wondering how I have them numbers, and how accurate and factual I am. The student body deserves the truth that you withhold from them. Mr. Agnew I have no use for you. Your NOT my sga president, and never was, hell as far as I consider it Virgil Miller is still the acting president, your just a seat warmer.

For the record, some of your colleagues don’t trust you, I hear this everyday from your own administration, and you are the George Bush of FAMU. Mr. Agnew the cards have been dealt and your spade has
been pulled you can’t hide behind Ramon or Andrew, it’s time to man up. I knew before you would play with this board of trustees’ seat, and now look at all the shit we in. You don’t speak for the students at these meetings, you would rather play with your phone, or text Ebony Manchion, or eager Vincent Evans. I hope your not doing anything wrong because the last time GOD and me conversed he said ADULTERY was a sin.

All the Agnew and Monique have done is preach a new AGE to FAMU, but in reality what they really were saying was time for a new hidden AGEnda. It’s time you step down. Now we got to deal with the dicTORCHship, but I know you’ll be around because you got another two years left.

For the record what happend to the $17,000 for that new
funiture for our dorms. Where is it? I guess its locked up in your office, which your never in.

The only thing you can account for that was good news off the board of trustees was that you voted to elect Dr. James Ammons as our next university president, and the only reason why you did that was because Mrs Thelma Thompson called you out and said, "My Dear Agnew," and you with your short temper got mad and frustraited.

Inconclusion, you had your run phillip and you proved to have failed the student body as a leader. You pub every party, and every single beta nu party, but you failed to pub and inform the important things going on with our beloved university.

    And
this is a warning to Monique Gillum and James Bland, you won but if you fail to hear our voices, you will feel the wrafth of the RATTLERNATION, AND YOUR ASS WILL BE GONE NEXT.

  31. 5:24--so now, Phillip Agnew is to blame for folks not keeping abreast of the happenings at their own university. Jesus christ, he can only do so much. But whether or not Agnew did his job has nothing to do with the need for the RattlerNation blogspot to exist. What the muck does that have to do with anything? The RattlerNation does not simply have a local readership; it's for Rattlers all over. What is he suppose to do? Get a megaphone and stand on a hilltop and shout the Board's findings to the masses? Give me a break. What is it that you people want?

  32. the students need to learn to be proactive...when i was at famu in the 1990s the students marched and were very vocal with regard to student issues.

I do give the students credit for bringing the lack of pay to media's attention.

  33. My older brother, an Alum, said in the old days SGA presidents earned their keep. Today you just spend alot of money make a few deals and you are president.

Phillip & Monique ran unchallenged. Why?

Phillip is an Alpha. Everybody knows that Delta's will not tolerate Alpha's running for president with out a challenge. This goes back for years. Delta's, nor Kappas stepped up to challenge Phillip & Monique Why?

Monique is a Delta wannie be or soon to be. So Phillip, an Alpha, put Monique (a soon-to-be) Delta, on his ticket to keep the strong bench of Delta's at bay. It worked but there's more.

    What about the Kappa's?
At the time the inbattle Kappa contender was dating a Delta who put some Hokis-Pokis on the brother and nuetralized is "ump". So right-out-the-gate he made silly mistakes that even he knew was wrong and as a result, the Kappa was disqualified even before the game started.

    The Deal.
Monique (Delta-Soon-To-Be)returns the favor and selects James Bland another Alpha as her running mate.

    The Hook
CVB is a Delta, the Student Senate and thus SGA is ran by Deltas. So basically, there is no real oversite. When you are sleeping with the enemy and the "Bang, Bang, Bang, Bang" is not that bad, in other words your getting yours....
    Things happen.

    The Future
Same old same old, expensive self-promotion radio commericals, billbords, parties, and a bunch of speaches and newspaper interviews. That's the only thing that matters to this "New AGE" stone-age administration.

The fruit don't fall far from the tree.

  34. 6:04 AM -- The students only brought the lack of pay to the media after two adjunct professors went to the local news and the Tallahassee Democrat, so please do not give them too much credit for being proactive. I am sure if it were not for those two adjuncts, those students would still be sitting up there quite as mice about their pay or lack thereof. They definitely could take some notes from your generation. Based on previous articles, I know that it was not through any efforts on the part of Phillip that the students decided to take a stand.

  35. 7:16--the conspiracy theory stuff is tired. I thought folks had stopped doing that 10 years ago when everyone swore the Alphas were taking over the campus. It's really not that serious in greekdom. This stuff goes in cycles. Even back in the day most of the SGA Presidents were Alphas. A couple of Kappas sprinkled in. Ditto for the other branches.

Not all of the old SGA presidents were created equal. There was some really good ones in the late 80s to mid 90s. But even the good ones had critics.

The students marched to get the law school back, marched about financial aid, marched about elections, etc back in the day. I would think its easier to organize now because there is a BOT. Back in the day there was just the Board of Regents.

  37. As an alumus I really cant say what Mr. Agnew has or hasn't done. But I must agree with an earlier post, why is there a focal point now that he is transitioning out of office?

I can say for some of the past SGA Presidents such as Darryl Parks, Larry Tate, Rod Stovall, and young Mr. Rivers they represented the students to a degree that news was spread coast to coast about their great work before the internet age. From fighting President Humphries for more student dollars (which were generously allocated to the students organizations large/small) to bringing in CNN. Whether we agreed or disagreed with their actions, they truly represented the student population first before their Fraternity or any other organization.

If he was indeed proactive active and vocal, I'm sure Rattler Nation, Capital Outlook, and the Tallahassee Democrat would have several quotes and continous articles with his fight for the Rattler Student Body. A good president knows how to mobilize the students/media to advance his agenda and the advancement of FAMU!

  38. Mr. Agnew will request electronic ankle and neck bacelets to be worn by all students that will deliver audio news as they develope 24 hours a day concerning the University, Tallahassee and the State of Florida. It will come in various colors. So if there are guys who want to order pink (Mr. Washington) pink is available.

    ReplyDelete
  39. 7:16--the conspiracy theory stuff is tired.

    These are facts.
If you are knowledgeable than you know this is true, and if you have had any experience in SGA as a student than you know in your heart of hearts these sort of deals are normal and that's what's so serious about it. People just can't, nor want to believe it, however, some of you know very well what this is about.

Sure it's silly, and sure it's not that serious. Whoever escalated my earlier post to “conspiracy thinking” is just plan wrong. My comment was not met to speculate about a conspiracy, it was met to highlight the real consequences of a “simple” but bad deal. A deal that although smart and good because kids should share, but unfortunately in this case it had the unanticipated consequences of No Oversight.

CVB did not crack down on the lack of oversight in SGA and SGA did not crack on the lack of oversight with CVB. It’s clear that something in SGA is not working. Hell, the SGA billboard looks like shit and has probably been change only 2 times over the course of 8 months Either SGA’s student leadership was too stupid to see it, or too sleep to notice it, or … sleeping with the enemy.

Control is bad but oversight is needed to keep people from intentional and unintentional abuse of power. It’s like the republicans and the democrats to much control by one power leads to lack of oversight and cronyism. SGA and CVB is all about cronyism.

  40. This is so interesting. I will not speak to what Phillip has or has not done. People who speak about conspricay theroy are usually the ones in the dark. When the CIA paid operatives to overthrow the democartacilly elected government of the Chile int he 70's and it was reported then it was said that they were "Conspricay Theorist". Yet, twenty-five years later the Gov. admitts it and then what. To late for Chile. Well that maybe to deep for some of you but it is factual.

Therfore, if you simply would read the book, The History of FAMU you would know that this is nothing new and so I will enlighten a few of my ignorant Rattlers and Outsiders who wish to read this blog and make simple comments which are baseless and factless.

This is an excerpt from the Crisis in 1923 concerning the resignation of the President of FAMC, President Young and he gave the following answere:

"I am retiring from the presidency of the Florida A.and M. College after twent-two golden years of service, and that too far for an appreciative people.I am leaving them not on theirs nor my own. I have become a "persona non grata",because, forsooth, I refused to snezze when the Federal Vocational agents took snuff. I refused to endorse their program for this college. They assisted by the GOVERNOR of the STATE, undertook, to redirect the activities of the College, to give it a more industrial trend. When it came to a showdown, however, they found that their policy could not be legally carried out, that the academic status of this College could not be changed by a resolution of the State Board of Education. I had anticipated this very thing, and, consequently, kept the growth of the College well within the law.

Having failed to accomplish their purpose by the use of direct methods, they resorted to indirect, political methods to secure another man to head up this enterprise, in the hope, evidently, of FINDING A MAN WHOM THEY COULD CONTROL.

THIS IS THE WAY THE SOUTH TREATS NEGROES WHOA ARE MEN ONCE IT GETS THEM IN ITS POWER. THERE ARE FEW COLORED STATE SCHOOLS LEFT IN THE SOUTH WHOS PRESIDENTS DARE TO CALL THEIR SOULS THIER OWN.

Read this and then fill in the blanks over the past five years. That is not conspriacy that is FACT.
    "
