Debra Austin throws in the towel

FAMU Provost Debra Austin publically confirmed one of the worst kept secrets in town yesterday, that she had long ago tendered her resignation effective May 31, 2007. RN reported this last week, and also mentioned that she too is using up her leave time.

Mrs. Austin was eased into the FAMU provost postion after being unceremoniously let go as Chancellor of the State University System. Mrs. Austin's appointment caused an uproar throughout the campus community because faculty had not been involved in her hiring process. The FAMU UFF waved the "shared governance" flag, but hard headed Castell wasn't having none of it. Afterall, "a deals a deal" and Castell had to take one for BOG Chair Carolyn Roberts.

We fully expect Mrs. Austin to wind up employed at Florida State University in some capacity.

Austin quits

  1. Is it safe 2 say, Dollar General won't be at this year career fair?

  2. If Challis is an example of Dollar General's management ability, would we WANT our students working there?

  3. Good Riddance. I'm so looking forward to this Fall.

  4. It's fine by us if Austin goes back to FSU--remember she was there in some type of made-up capacity when she assumed the Chancellor position. The FSU gig was given to her after she was not hired as TCC's permanent president, after serving in an interim spot there. She had been at TCC for, something like, eighteen or twenty years in a number of academic capacities. As long as she exits FAMU, we really don't care where the woman goes.

  5. THIS is the resignation I had been waiting for. The benefit of Bryant was we knew for better or worst she was staying, I thought we would be stuck with Austin's in competence.

After meeting with this woman numerous times, it is clear to me that she was the definition of incompetent. Like Castell she would not listen to reason, and had a reluctance to learning about or even listening to previous mistakes made by prior administrations (what a FOOL).

I am glad to see her go, and if all I've heard about Ammons is correct I'm sure he will lead us in hiring a competent Provost because Dr. Austin is not one.

  6. She never should have been hired in the first place.

  8. Relatively speaking, Dr. Austin should be respected. She is one of the few VP's that seemed to clearly understand her role as temporary. Can't say the same about June and his ghetto fabulous crew.

  9. The plan was for Austin to become the FAMU prez after Caz left office.

Had they initiated the Presidential search say 6 months after Castell took office, we very well may be looking at PRESIDENT AUSTIN right now. Fortunately, they waited too long and the entire Corbin Cabal got fucked up as everything started coming to light.

  10. I think you got Dr. June and his staff twisted. He is the one VP that came on board and clearly understood his role. Both students, faculty, and staff really like the environment that he's created. He's classy and i'm sure he's not worried about what's coming down the pipeline.

Workwise he's a professional and topshelf.
