Crestview Mayor David Cadle reported Thursday that funding has been approved for a Florida A&M University pharmacy school in Crestview.

"I got a call from Sen. (Durell) Peaden yesterday saying the governor has signed the budget," Cadle said.

The mayor said "the Alatex Building is certainly one of the possibilities" for the school's main building, which will be located in downtown Crestview.

"We are pleased that FAMU is interested in Crestview," Cadle said. Crestview is expected to donate a city-owned building to FAMU for use. According to Cadle, "there have been no formal talks between FAMU and the city as of yet." Those talks are expected to begin soon.

Crestview is a city of about 21,000 and is located in Okaloosa County one of the fastest growing regions in the panhandle. It is about a 20min drive from Destin, Ft. Walton Beach and about 30 mins from Panama City.

  2. This really looks like a win-win situation. NW Florida gets an economic boost and our university picks up some much-needed room to expand.

  3. And don't forget the diversity !

  4. Diversity is a trick word used by both conservatives and librals alike to confuse and disarm African Americans. How is Diversity good everywhere but the Halls, Board Rooms, and Seats of Justice? They put this diversity and inclusion crap in the minds of only African Americans while they celabrate the "China" towns, "Korean" towns etc. throughout America. The Diversity myth is going to be the down fall of "Black America". Think about what would happen if we keep giving up our history and values in the name of "Diversity".

  6. Poster 4:20 PM,

I don't know who you are, but I certainly appreciate your comments. I agree with everything you say. I always felt that "diversity" was intended to put black people on guilt trips. To hell with diversity. The US Supreme Court is not diverse.

    Keep on posting the truth.

  7. Why can't they make the current pharmacy program in Tallahassee? Why don't they give this new school its own name. How could it possibly help FAMU to have a random school a hundred miles away to administer (see: Law School).

  8. The main pharmacy school will remain in Tallahassee. The Crestview campus will be an EXTENSION branch.

The University of Florida's pharmacy school also has an extension branch. It's located in Orlando. The extension branch offers a full Professional Pharm.D. Program. The link to its website is below:

This is an outstanding opportunity for FAMU's pharmacy school to grow and serve even more students.

The School of Pharmacy was organized in 1951 as part of the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical College (FAMC). The thrust for pharmaceutical education at FAMC came from community health care leaders and health professionals on campus who saw the need for pharmaceutical services in communities across the country.
The designation, College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (COPPS), was made in 1985 in recognition of the expanded role and mission of the College in professional and graduate education. The evolution of the College has witnessed the initiation of pharmacy education with just one student in the beginning to now being one of the largest colleges of pharmacy in the country.

The College has expanded its operations from the main campus located in the capital city of Florida; Tallahassee. Extension campuses are located in Miami and Tampa, Florida. These campuses, all affiliated with a major teaching medical center, create outstanding clinical training opportunities for the student, provide unlimited opportunities for research and support the infrastructure for the College's statewide commitment to pharmacy education and public service.
