Alan Williams(in white T-shirt above), the local president of the FAMU Alumni Chapter coasted to an easy victory in crowded field in the State House District 8 primary election yesterday claiming 41.1 % of the vote. Williams used is long-time community involvement and strong name recognition to beat back his six challengers.
Williams, who earned his B.S. and MBA from FAMU, bleeds Rattler Orange & Green and moves on to face a write-in candidate and a no party affiliate candidate in the general election. The 8th district is heavily Democratic.
In Jacksonville
In a showdown between two former City Council members, FAMU graduate Mia Jones came out on top.
Unofficial results showed her taking the Democratic nomination for state House District 14 after a close race and a heated campaign.
Opponent Pat Lockett-Felder called Jones - 20 years her junior - inexperienced. Jones fired back that Lockett-Felder was mostly talk.
"Voters want to see improvements," Jones said.
At midnight, Jones appeared tho have 1,000 vote lead.
Jones is the likely candidate to face Republican Sarah Lovett in November's general election. House District 14 is a heavily Democratic district.
In Miami
In District 118, which stretches from Florida City to Kendall, Dwight Bullard was able to beat back three challengers to keep the seat in his family. Bullard won 40on tap to replace his father Ed Bullard, who replaced his mother State Senator Larcenia Bullard, extending the Bullard family 16-year claim to the South Dade district's House seat another two years.
Dwight's race apparently got a little ugly with acquisitions flying everywhere. On his "MySpace" page, Bullard thanked one of his opponents for making his page's pictures public.

ReplyDeleteAccording to news reports, Alan Williams will be in a run-off with Rudy Maloy, because he, Williams, did not garner 51%. He received 49% of the vote, and Maloy was the next highest with, I believe,
ReplyDelete1,200+ votes. The field was crowded, with about seven contenders for the Distrit 8 seat. Alan Williams received 4,4500 votes. (I might be off in the "500" numbers range, but not by much. I'm not looking at the paper right now, just using the old memory bank, which falters every now & again.) I voted for Alan.
4:15pm,
ReplyDeleteYour news is WRONG ! Florida has a WINNER Take all primary. So the highest vote getter in a primary is the winner. Here in Miami, Rep. James Bush won the Democratic primary with 28 % !!!!
In fact, when you look at the Dist.8 election results Rudy Maloy wasn't even the 2nd place candidate. Some woman was.
My understanding is Alan will face a non-partisan candidate in November. He did clinch the democratic nomination for house seat 8.
