Ammons makes pitch to full Senate

President James Ammons urged the Florida Senate to maintain public universities' funding and let all 11 schools raise tuition on their own.

In a rare honor, Ammons addressed the full Senate from the podium Thursday.

He said more budget cuts like those the universities have sustained over the past couple years would dash the hopes and dreams of the Florida's youth.

Ammons also made a pitch for a bill to let all universities raise tuition up to 15% a year until it reaches the national average. Five large universities already have such differential tuition authority but limited to no more than 40% total.

Florida's base tuition set by lawmakers is among the nation's lowest.

Ammons was a guest of the Senate in recognition of FAMU Day.

  1. Did he also make a pitch for increasing professors' salaries -- those at the bottom of the $$ chain, too? The university is losing good professors who are moving to institutions that pay more money.

  2. Didn't Dr. Ammons already say that faculty raises were one of his top priorities for this year?

  4. Most state universities are losing professors because of budget cuts. Some universities are considering furloughs. We really need to lobby the legislature to properly fund higher education.

  5. period. This lottery sham needs to be busted too. We've effectively decided to use the pocket change from the poor folks- who through sickness or hope play the lottery praying for a win, to fund the most important force and ingredient behind a thriving and successful modern civilization. We were probably better off with the small time number runners. The lottery money was supposed to be the icing on the cake, but we should have known that it was a lie, we should have known that it was all a sham. Oh I bet the prisons are getting what they need, maybe not want, but definitely the budget won't be as tough on that end. It is TIME FOR CHANGE FOR FLORIDA! YES WE CAN , AND WE MUST !

  8. Thank you, 11:23. It seems that 9:38 and in particular 11:02 are out to lunch. I suggest 11:02 follow their own advice and "pick up a darn paper." Obviously, they are relying on RN to provide pertinent information on all things FAMU. I think not. Idiot.
