What's wrong with the 100rd?

We've all heard of the big elephant in the room that no one is willing to talk about, right? Well Saturday there were 420 elephants in Bragg Stadium that not many people are willing to talk about publicly. Those elephants, dressed in orange, occupied all of section "Q".

First, there was the poorly conceived "drill" and downfield march that, at times, left whole clumps of "orange elephants" lost and way out of line. What we saw Saturday WAS NOT a precision drill", but more of a casual we'll just show up "we're the orange elephants" you gotta love us drill. Precision was no where to be found.

Then there's the lack of energy, intensity and basic marching by the elephants. Do the orange elephants even march anymore?

Did anyone notice how the entire tuba section just seem to walk off the field never lifting a knee until it came their individual time to jump up and split?

Rumor has it the elephants were just handed the show to practice on Thursday. But whose fault is that?

"Precision in MARCHING, Perfection in MUSICIANSHIP, and so on and so on," should be much more than part of the orange elephant's motto, but would better demonstrated at every performance.

The show wasn't a complete mess, the concert selection and dance routine was "fire", and the orange elephants sounded really good. But the drill and the overall show concept didn't seem well thought out. The orange elephants can do better.

Here's a look at the competition. Notice the energy and intensity and how the transition from one aspect of the show to the other flowed well.

  1. The first thing wrong with the drill was the music is the exact same song they played for the game opener last year and half drilled.

They should have gone with another "MJ" song.

  2. There's nothing wrong with the 100rd. This is the first game and we don't need to panic. Sure we have high expectations for our band, but Southern or no other band can touch us.

  3. 3:45,

Stop making excuses for the 100! RN is just pointing out what we've all noticed.

Surely, this band can, will, and should do better!

  4. Please tell me we are not comparing the 100rd to another band. Are we serious? One bad drill and we're the "orange elephants"? Wow! I guess the poster is a former band member...

  5. 5:02 pm,

I think you are missing the point.

I guess RN could have easily compared this band to an older more precise version of the 100rd would that have made you happy?

  6. RN is on point. And this isnt just an isolated incident either. This issue with the orange elephant has actually been going on for years, but now someone is FINALLY saying something about it! Although the 100rd is a wonderful recruiting asset and great ambassador to the university, they are still open to constructive criticism. Maybe this expose will put the band on notice in terms of room for improvement and maintaining the MARK OF EXCELLENCE that we all know they are known for. WE STILL AND ALWAYS WILL LOVE YOU MARCHING 100rd!!!!

As far as comparing the 100 to Southern - CHILE BOO! They have been doing that same MJ show since the 1980s so of course it will be fluid and perfected after executing it 1000 times!

  7. I remember last year band members kept getting lost in the "lost man" drill going in the wrong direction!

Julian needs to get it together, the 100rd is looking kinda sloppy!

  8. A couple of points: It is clear that this is the first game for the 100rd. Still not a totally bad show. The freshmen are still mastering the "concept" of our marching style. It usually starts to gel together during the 2nd and 3rd games. Secondly, obvious the writer of the article is an observant but unskilled when it comes to the 100rd technique or history. We learn 2 shows per rehearsal because we, unlike the "band" that was shown as a lesson in contrast/comparison try NOT to always do the same show annually. Because of the difficulty of what we do, it takes longer to perfect. Give us time. Finally, we NEVER compare ourselves to other bands. We are our competition-previous years' bands. We invite to pick up an instrument and meet us on the field. Thanks for the constructive criticism.

  9. 9:21, since you are defending the band, can you tell why the 100rd does not keep the stands crunk? Funk it out and keep the fans hyped to cheer on the team. This is something the 100rd just does not do.

As for the dance routine, I really haven't seen anything that impressed me since the Heartbeat show in Baton Rouge.

The 100rd needs to step it up!

  10. I was in the band a good ten years ago (where does the time go), and the exact same thing happened in the first game. Lines were totally screwed up, whole sections missed cues. Looked like a bunch of 7 year olds.

I grew up in a militaristic band style and nothing p8sses me off more than crooked lines and crappy marching. I will say it's very very difficult for freshmen (50-60% of the band) to pick up all of this up and learn a new show in what 3 weeks, but you only get better by doing. Just wearing that heavy uniform in the heat can throw off your concentration.

Hell, many upperclassmen have done little to no practicing since the FLA Classic and couldn't hit a 90 without pulling something.

May be worth the effort to pare down the first show to get everyone used to marching with 90s while playing and keeping focus of field position. Yeah it's early, but TV cameras were still rolling.

  11. The band that you see is indicative of the society that we're living in now! The discipline and the focus that's required to excel in ANYTHING is missing from many of our youth today. Do you expect the band staff to lose their livelihood while trying to instill pride and discipline into kids who haven't properly received it before arriving on the Patch? I WOULDN'T!! I, too was disappointed in the lack of precision that was displayed as I watched the show and I will take full reponsibilty...and here's why: WHEN I VISIT TALLY, I CHECK ON MY SECTION. TROMBONES HAVE TRADITIONALLY BEEN ONE OF THE TIGHT SECTIONS THROUGHOUT THE YEARS BECAUSE WE BELIEVE IN "THUNDER SPIRIT", BUT I HAVEN'T BEEN INVOLVED AS MUCH AS I SHOULD HAVE. EVERYBODY THAT MARCHED WAS INVOLVED IN A LEGACY, BUT FEW OF US HAVE BEEN INSTRUMENTAL IN HELPING TO...CONTINUE THAT LEGACY!!ALL WE DO IS RUN OUR DAMN MOUTHS!! IF WE'RE THAT CONCERNED SHOW UP LIKE I DID THIS YEAR AND SPEAK TO THEM, SHOW UP LIKE I DID AND PLAY YOUR HORN WITH THEM, SHOW UP LIKE "BATMAN" AND ENCOURAGE THEM!! IF YOU'RE NOT DOING THAT, SHUT YOUR MOUTH AND LET DOC AND CHIP HANDLE THEIR BUSINESS!! I won't remain anonymouus either. You can contact me or come and see me if you don't feel me! You're either IN the "100" family or OUT...FOR or AGAINST!! You can either HELP or HATE!! Make an executive decision and...CHOOSE!! My name is Albert London Arrington and I choose to HELP CONTINUE THE LEGACY!!

  12. So other people working under the same time constraints can make straight lines, stay in line, and the like but FAMU students can not??? This is because the 100rd concept of making a straight line is "different" (i.e. more difficult)?

    I say bull shit!

It wasn't that the lines weren't straight, it's that groups of people were missing from the lines and running to catch up after the lines turned and went the other way!!! Open your eyes!!!

This video conceals what the eye actually saw Saturday.

    ReplyDelete
  13. 11:06, to educate you on musicality and what the FAMU Band is about would take too long but other bands are still reaching for the full development of what we have as a music program NOT just a human jukebox.

As it relates to precision, the culture of the today's bands have drastically changed. The amount of discipline that it takes for most bands to be at full caliber cannot be done today because this generation looks at that as hazing. I don't condone hazing but in the marching world, all bands are suffering. Southern just came through that type litigation. It's easy to be on the sidelines critiquing because your entertainment quotient has not been met, but the 100rd will be what it always has been- the Best!

Oh yeah- HUBBA AL!! Alums gotta do better about the Legacy!

  14. These band folks come up with the LAMEst azz excuses for why they can't do simple shit like stay in line, when clearly everyone else is!!!!

It's too hard! We're the 100rd, we ought to not be held to the same standard as everyone else.

    ReplyDelete
  15. The reason why we do not play much in the stands is because the football staff has asked/argued/demanded/insisted that we don't play pretty much when the ball is in motion. So you tell me when does that leave us time to play much? This issue comes up every year and the same durned answer is provided.

It's hard to believe that other teams can manage to play football with their bands playing and tens of thousands of fans screaming but FAMU football can't get it done...

    ReplyDelete
  16. 2:59, are you in the band? Just wondering because you seem to be spazzing over the straight line issue. You sound like someone who is on this sight from another bang or something. Come and help us with your expertise! SMH...

  17. Most of you folks complaining and criticizing probably can't sing a tap or hit a lick at a snake. These are young kids learning the craft. Lighten up. Dang.

  18. The 100 needs to down size. Do we REALLY need 425 members???

    ReplyDelete
  19. As a former band member, the 100rd is big. Any band of this size will make mistakes. The 100rd will get better in coming games.

    ReplyDelete
  20. To the responder of why the band is not keeping it crunk, my response is based on why the band has to play down or not at all. If this is not the answer to your question, please ignore this message with my apologies.

I understand a few years ago, there was a crack down at either the NCAA and/or conference level on delay of games and/or playing during the game. I heard there were enough complaints overall, so there was a crack down. I understand this crackdown was just not limited to the MEAC.

The NCAA rules and interpretations manual discusses this. The 2008 document is online at http://www.ncaapublications.com/Uploads/PDF/Football_Rulesadc982b5-03fb-4e27-828c-c2d26b95e6c1.pdf. I'm not sure if the 2009 is available. If you download this document, go to pages FR-20 FR-75 and FR-123. To provide respect and support to the team, there is a lot less play, because that ONE penalty could be the difference in a W or a L on our record. If that's the case, then let the band go from forte to pianissimo...or better yet, silence. Never forget, the band is playing at a FOOTBALL game, not a BAND game.

As far as musicianship is concerned, consider the facts before you go there. Do you REALLY know what is takes to put together a show? I applaud the 100 because they MAKE it look easy. There are many details to getting a show together. I'm sure if you have any questions or constructive criticism, either Dr. White or Dr. Chipman would be happy to answer your questions, or better yet, let you walk a minute in their shoes.

RN - may I suggest a story on what it takes to make a show for the 100. You have some good criticism, but can we back it up as to what or why?

If you have ever attended the first game (but that may be part of the problem), there are usually some bugs to shake out.

Not offering excuses, just giving some facts. There are more musicians that attend FAMU, but not everyone will enter the 100 because of priorities, or are afraid. Good, bad or indifferent, I have and will continue to support ALL of the University Band Programs and their staff: marching, symphonic, jazz, flute choir, percussion ensembles... and the list goes on and on.

    ReplyDelete
  21. The Orange Elephants are in denial !!! They've got all kinds of excuses why they can't do basic things one expects of a marching band: march, stay in formation, and bring excitement and energy to your own show!

Every other band can do this, but the Orange Elephants want an exemption! Special treatment! Of course, they are the Orange Elephants!

    ReplyDelete
  22. I too wish the band would be more VOCAL and instrumental in supporting the football team and hyping the crowd. That is the primary purpose of the marching band's presence at a football game is it not?

The MEAC conference rules state that the band can play during dead ball and timeout situations during the game. The band can also play when their team's offense has the ball, although I think it would be counterproductive for the band to play while the offense has the ball. The loud volume may make hearing the snap count impossible.

With all of that being said, the MEAC doesnt have rules about the band assisting the crowd and cheerleaders in DEFENSE and OFFENSE chants. My point is you dont need a brass instrument to make some noise to support the team! The band has 400+ God given instruments that can be just as resonant. And the MEAC cant restrict that.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Once again, the ignorance is astounding. So now it's the band's responsibility to "help" the cheerleaders and crowd root for the team? According to a recent article in the Tallahassee Democrat, the coaches and players of the team were praising the 100rd because of the encouragement and excitement they bring to the game in turn helping them do their job on the field. Calling us the "Orange Elephant" is cool. We know who we are and the nation does as well. We represent FAMU during and after the football season. The 100rd are the consistent fans in the stands. It's funny that some on this thread are talking about marching techniques but do are not a part of the band. Another critic that will be silenced by our progressive excellence. Keep watching...

  24. "If that's the case, then let the band go from forte to pianissimo...or better yet, silence. Never forget, the band is playing at a FOOTBALL game, not a BAND game."

Hubba 11:05pm! That should answer 3:01pm's question of what the band should do when the ball IS and ISN'T in motion. Surely it is not rocket science when marching bands playing at greater volumes than the 100rd already practice such methods.

    ReplyDelete
  25. 11:38pm,

I am aware of that Tallahassee Democrat article as well where Coach Taylor described the 100rd as the team's "12th man". So in essence that's what a 12th man does - support the team and help the crowd get into the game! I mean that's alot better than sitting quiet on your behind during a critical 3rd down defensive stand, or playing a stupid trombone fanfare after offensively converting a critical 1st down. Sometimes I wonder if the band even knows that there's a football game happening on the field. Serious talk, maybe the band needs a lesson in Football 101. I'm sure the coaching staff and players would be more than happy to oblige.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Quite simply, the Marching 100 is there to please the fans just like the football team pleases fans when they win ballgames.

When fans aren't pleased, they complain...basically, the fans aren't really pleased with 100 at this point.

Honestly it just feels like the band has gotten lazy over the past few years.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I love the Marching 100 and I can appreciate the comments of the band members who are posting, however, I was in the stands watching and there is NO excuse why there was an entire gap on the F when you were spelling out FAMU during the pre-game performance. There is NO excuse for some sections going in the opposite direction of their of section mates.

I will defend the 100 to the end but not this time. How long did ya'll practice that routine? All of these excuses aren't cutting it and you can't blame all of that on freshmen because I saw drum majors messing up also.

I think folks are now taking being in the band for granted. If they don't have the energy or the drive to keep up, then they should be put in the stands.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Speaking of discipline where the band is concerned- I remember when from the time the band left the band room, to the time they finished after the game, whatever the section leader did, the rest of the section followed through. Just watching them waiting to go up into the stands, or when they went onto the field before halftime, everybody did precise movements after the section leader made his movement, and t was a sight to behold. And. all of the "talking to friends/homies" and just general milling around was not tolerated. As a member of the "100" you were on stage from the time you left the band room. "The Law" wouldn't have it any other way.

  30. RN, and the peanut gallery has bumped its head. I am a staunch supporter of RN because it is a place where WE RATTLERS (and apparent HATERS) can come TOGETHER and make FAMU better. You need ideas? We can talk. But to single out the MARCHING 100 is narrow and naive. If we were to go into detail about the band, we'd have to go where you should have started- the music and athletic departments, game-day experience, cheerleaders, students and FANS(not haters). There are several things that an outsider can see that mean very little in the grand scheme of building a band. Let's talk about making the band PROGRAM better, not about a line that you never auditioned to make. Let's say that they NEED TUTORS and HOUSING and physical trainers. Marketing and sponsorship, bolster the PROGRAM! Here is a shovel ready opportunity- a department which is extensively supportive and representative of the University and community, from the marching band to the flute chior. I'll tell you that most of what's "wrong" with the band is the "DRUMLINE MENTALITY", the Nick Cannon complex. Even some of you, think you understand band. Would we tolerate our quarterback being illiterate and ignorant of the playbook? NO. Some say it can be attributed to the large "female"(mental or physical) presence in the ranks. Plausable but unlikely, I understand the argument-I know women who agree. The critics were allowed to make "suggestions" for a TRADITIONAL band. Now they end up chasing fads and disposable "music" and "dances" meanwhile there isn't much room before the critics want something else disposable. They now play 30 second snippits of worthless sound-bytes and more musical arrangements are practiced and rehearsed for a random show that most would never get to see save for a youtube sighting. Meanwhile the others get more like our band. Knowledge is beautiful. The size of the band is not nearly as important as the scope. We could have every member alive out there playing, if its done the HUNDRED way, it will be clean. The HUNDRED doesn't do crunk or "play loud(ly)", we play BIG( one of our concepts). Students today find it difficult to BUILD anything. To do anything gradual and methodical is a monstrous task.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I instruct high school students and we often have to trick them into perfecting a concept. Gotta trick the family to come and support them too. Showing and expecting execution rarely occurs. They listen as far as WHAT to do but, it takes more than creativity to get them interested in details of HOW to. The feeder schools have been shifted to Georgia and that makes a difference too. Band "directors" from BCu and other places are employed at some of our historical key recruitment hotbeds. Sometimes stifling the network and worse, NOT TEACHING THE STUDENT, especially if they aren't interested in their college. See once again, its a BAND PROGRAM, not just a show. Not much unlike the competitive world of athletics. The band would love to play more, maybe that will happen more with coach Taylor's and the teams' support in place. Sure wish the FANS would remember that football aint pretty and the fans are the force behind the home field advantage(twelfth man)- the band is the soundtrack to the game. Put on some ORANGE and GREEN and awake the spirit of RattlerNation. It's give and take, the crowd noisily supports and takes satisfaction and glory with the team-in a win, just as a loss. This aint golf or tennis where you wait til AFTER something happens to cheer. So you might as well cheer, if not, I'm sure there will be hot air coming out sooner than later. I'd much rather hear it during the game! About the game! Our band is one of few which acknowledge and respects the will of the team and doesn't try to upstage the moment for themselves. I understand how other bands/conferences get that way, lol(get what you can). When Billy Joe had the RAC boys, we didn't really run offense on audibles. I know it was messy communication with CVB and DOC White, but that's gone(thank you). Coach Taylor seems to have addressed that topic handily. That makes a difference. FYI Southern is NOT a peer marching band. And the hater(s) obviously didn't make the lineup. Probably from a non-TREE SHAKIN' era to boot anyhow. Which is how they think that complaining (HATING.., and I never use that term) will make the HUNDRED like other bands. That is also an issue, our band is getting to be a little too much "like" others and meanwhile our band camp has benefited college bands nationwide. Finally this is a SPECTATOR SPORT. Thank you for your support! SMH Meet me on the fifty! If ANYBODY WANTS TO KNOW..!

  34. The HUNDRED is about the same size of its PEER bands. See, we broke those chains long ago and like many academic programs, critics want to simply categorize us with only HBCUs. As if that is a blight, but also to limit us. Any 'ol snake can bite...

    ReplyDelete
  35. A review of RN stories, show's that the blog has been quite a BIG 100rd supporter over the years often taking on the administration on behalf of the band.

Where this crap comes from that the blog is a hater is pure fantasy. The 100rd is not above constructive criticism.

    ReplyDelete
  36. What part of the coaching staff does not want us to play during ball play do you not understand?

MEAC, NCAA handbook, edict from Heaven, rule or whatever... Coaches can still set their own rules and preferences within those guidelines. There is no pianissimo, 'bringing it down' playing it softly. Nothing. We are not allowed to make any instrument noise.

While some of the comments have been relevant, others indicate that some posters have no idea WTH they are talking about.

Maybe if more fans other than the SGA/student section that sit in front of us got off their behinds instead of trying to look cute and cheered you wouldn't be so dependent on needing the band to tell you when to get crunk.

    ReplyDelete
  37. 10:22, I agree with the constructive criticism point. Those are the things that makes us better. What I do bristle at is this "orange elephants" misnomer or this comparison to other bands as if the writer understand what they are talking about. Some other comments on this thread are not being constructive. Calling us "lazy azzez" and excuse makers is ridiculous. We practice just as hard as the football team does to do what we do. Some shows are great; others are not so great. We are not and nor will we ever be the JUKEBOX TOP 40 band! Trust me, bands all across the country are trying to figure out how we do what we do. We can take criticism. That's the price of being on top and rightly so. But we will not stand by and allow people who are NOT a part of building our legacy to trash us with pseudo-critique and question whether these people are true RATTLERS! You don't degrade your own! We represent FAMU worldwide!Hubba!

  38. Just missing the turn count is crazy. Apparantly the band was not ready for the pregame, etc. As I was in the band, I remember distinctly upperclassmen who would show up on Wednesday from NOWHERE to march on Saturday. And they would get a position, etc with no sweat b/c they crossed in the section.

The band needs to be more like the football team, in that you don't practice, you don't go on the field. It all goes back to discipline, for both the leadership and the membership.

As great as the 100 is, I don't think we'd see any other MEAC Band with whole sections out of place on the first game.

  40. 10:22, I never said that RN is a HATER. The haters know who they are. A hit dog will yelp. You can't constructively criticize things you don't understand. It is possible to talk about the program from a distance due to transference of learning. But only a hater would try to nit pick at a technique the band uses or makes mistakes at. We don't discuss the skills involved with basketball or anything else. The scathing remarks are from an anonymous hater that likely is from somewhere else and/or never made the cut(during an eliminate yourself era). We know who these people are.Our RATTLER FANS don't wait to get on the blog to "constructively criticize". We know our toughest audience is OUR OWN. There are people here who aren't, and they like to cloud up any positive approach to or means of MAKING FAMU BETTER. Oh it's REAL.- Miss Ross, The WIZ

  46. 11:35p,

Not a damn thing. That's just a defensive mechanism to deflect from the truth. The audacity to even think that the band is beyond reproach and critique from the RN. Get over yourselves, off your behinds, and support our football team. At this point, the band is no different from the same "too cute to cheer" students one poster is attempting to villify. If the Rattler fans in Bragg cant depend on the band to facilitate a crunk atmosphere and assist in supporting our team, then what is the purpose of having a marching band at a football game? I mean Section Q is prime real estate for season ticket/50 yard line seats on the East side $$$$$$$$

  53. no one had a problem when RN was busting Gainous, Castell, Hayes or even Ammons chops for screwing up. Certainly not the football team.

But some witty criticism of some obvious mistakes made on the field and the 100 members go crazy talking about hating and whatnot. Maybe they should teach some sensitivity courses. Everything said on the RN forum is certainly being said in the stands on gameday, just not as nice.

  54. Wow, 55 comments about a first game. Interesting.

Having been affiliated closely with the band for 25 years, I've seen my share of mistakes during our first games. I've been upset because we didn't live up to the standards of our predecessors, and we set out to push ourselves even harder to achieve perfection in our next shows.

While I would love to see the band have a perfect first show, I know that's not feasible, and I'm appalled at some of the comments I have read from people who think that the "100" should have a flawless first show.

Our football team didn't execute their game plan perfectly, but we still won; the "100" didn't execute a perfect halftime show, but they sounded great, and the dance routine had a lot of sound and energy.

There are a few things that I want you all to think about:

    1. This is the first time our freshmen have performed in Bragg, so there are bound to be jitters. There's nothing you can do about that when you see 17,000+ people looking at you perform your first show as a collegian.

    2. The uniforms add about 10lbs. to your body. If you go back to the first point, then add this together, fatigue sets in faster than before, and can affect your concentration.

    3. Performing in Bragg is different than performing at practice. The stadium has very thick grass, much higher than on the drill field. That wears you out faster, as well.

    4. We performed 2 full shows, WITH the halftime exit. That basically means that our freshmen had around 3 weeks to get the marching style down (Slow One AND the Rattler), learn pre-game and halftime, as well as become better acquainted with our playing style.

I find it very hard to believe that OUR students would go out and give less than their best for our fans. That's not how we do things at FAMU.

It's not easy for people to perform in front of fanatical fans who have high expectations of them in their first performance.

The show on Thursday will be better than what you saw, and by the time we get to Atlanta, you will see even more improvement when we face Tennessee State.

Time, patience, desire, drive, and understanding are things that I remind myself of when working with ANY organization.

    The "100" will be fine.

I only hope that those of you who are complaining about how badly they look will come back and give them praises when they do well. We all need some positive motivation in our lives.

Let's work on being that motivation for our students.

Thanks Al, for holding things down.

    See you all on Thursday!

    Victor R. Gaines,
    President
Marching 100 Alumni Band Association, Inc.

  55. 11:28, You know than this thread won't impact FAMU the way the topics YOU mentioned did. Ingorant. Having something to learn. And as for 11:49, it must be an orgy 'cause you're hangin' from the scrotes. The band isn't for everyone. Perhaps you were one such example. Once again, if you have nothing to add, you don't qualify to part lips. Enjoy the show or KICK ROCKS. You don't wanna WIN!
