Georgia is one FAMU’s top recruiting grounds for out-of-state students. And after each year’s commencement ceremonies, many young FAMU alumni pack up their dorm belongings and report to work in the Peach State.

The Metro-Atlanta Chapter of the FAMU National Alumni Association (NAA) is now pushing for a car tag that will officially recognize the Orange & Green presence in Georgia. The state will begin manufacturing Rattler tags once it receives 1,000 paid pre-orders.

Each pre-order costs $35.

According to the chapter’s website: “Of the $35 application fee, $25 from each tag manufacture request submitted to the chapter will go towards the $25,000 required by the State of Georgia to manufacture the first 1,000 plates.  $10 per request remains with the Metro-Atlanta Chapter of the FAMU National Alumni Association to cover administrative costs of marketing the tag and the purchase of required bonds and insurance in order to gain approval for a FAMU license plate from the State of Georgia.”

The 1,000 pre-orders are due before the state-imposed two-year window expires in October 2014. If the tag doesn’t net enough pre-orders by the deadline, then the money (minus the application fee) will be refunded to the purchasers.

Unfortunately, as an out-of-state university, FAMU will not receive any money the tag’s sales. This is different from the specialty license plate program in Florida, which automatically remits money from tag sales back to the public universities that participate in it.

Every Rattler in Georgia should support this opportunity to display FAMU pride across the Peach State.
