The FAMU Rattlers Volleyball team secured the 2024 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Volleyball Tournament title on Sunday, defeating Jackson State University (JSU) 3-1 in Grambling, La.
The victory marks FAMU's third SWAC championship title in the last four years, solidifying the Rattlers’ dominance in the conference with previous titles in 2021 and 2022. Under the leadership of head coach Gokhan Yilmaz, the Rattlers have now achieved three 20-win seasons, boasting an impressive overall record of 27-6 for the 2024 season. This total also represents the highest number of wins in a single season during Yilmaz's tenure, surpassing the team’s previous records of 25-7 in 2021 and 21-13 in 2022.
The Rattlers displayed remarkable consistency throughout the season, finishing with an undefeated 19-0 conference record, earning the team the regular season and tournament championships.
Brooke Lynn Watts led the offensive charge with 13 kills, while Jada Rhodes contributed 12. Watts also recorded her 11th double-double of the season, adding 15 digs to her performance.
Senior Isis Williams was a defensive powerhouse, achieving a season-high 10 blocks along with five kills and five digs. With 297 career blocks, Williams moved into sixth place in FAMU's all-time block leaders, surpassing Randi Lee (1991-94).
In addition to strong performances from Watts and Williams, Makenzie Taylor delivered a team-high 16 assists, and Tinons Galmés anchored the defense with a match-high 19 digs.
With their tournament victory, the Rattlers are set to represent the SWAC in the NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Tournament. The official bracket for the tournament will be announced on Sunday, December 1, as FAMU looks to make an impact on the national stage.
