Sammy Knight, a former FAMU football standout who led the Rattlers to their first-ever victory over the Division I Miami Hurricanes in 1979, has died. Knight, who stood at 5 foot 8 inches tall, passed away Sunday morning at his home in the Daytona Beach area. He was in his mid-60s and had been in failing health, according to former high school teammates.
Born and raised in Tallahassee, Knight's athletic prowess was evident early on. He played high school football at Godby High, where he led the Cougars to their first state championship. His talent and versatility on the field made him a highly sought-after recruit.
"Sammy was one of the best all-around players I had the privilege of recruiting and signing at FAMU," said former FAMU football coach Rudy Hubbard. "He could do it all; he was such a special talent."
Knight's crowning achievement came in 1979 when he led the Rattlers to a historic 16-13 victory over the Miami Hurricanes, a game widely regarded as one of the greatest upsets in college football history. His contributions to the team and his community left a lasting legacy.
"I thought it was a really big deal when we were able to land Sammy and keep him in Tallahassee," Hubbard added. "He was a remarkable athlete and an even better person."
Knight's passing is a significant loss for the FAMU community and the world of college football. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of athletes.
