FAMU bets on cybersecurity as demand for digital talent soars

At a time when cyberattacks are disrupting hospitals, businesses and government agencies with increasing frequency, FAMU is quietly building one of its most strategic academic investments: a cybersecurity program designed to prepare students for one of the nation's fastest-growing and most consequential professions.


The university officially launched its Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degree programs in Cybersecurity in the fall of 2022, expanding its portfolio of science and technology offerings as employers across the country scramble to fill a widening shortage of cybersecurity professionals.


Housed within FAMU's College of Science and Technology and inside the Department of Computer and Information Sciences, the newish degree programs combine classroom instruction with research opportunities intended to prepare graduates for careers protecting digital infrastructure from increasingly sophisticated threats.


The degree offerings are supported by FAMU's Center for Cybersecurity, which has earned designation as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education, a distinction recognizing institutions that meet rigorous standards for cybersecurity education and workforce development.


The timing could hardly be more significant.


According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of information security analysts—the occupation most closely aligned with cybersecurity degrees—is projected to grow 32.7 percent between 2023 and 2033, making it the fastest-growing computer occupation and one of the five fastest-growing occupations in the nation.


The surge reflects a rapidly changing technological landscape in which ransomware attacks, artificial intelligence-powered cyber threats, data breaches and attacks on critical infrastructure have transformed cybersecurity from a niche technical specialty into a cornerstone of national security and economic resilience.


For graduates, the opportunities extend well beyond Silicon Valley.


Career paths include cybersecurity analyst, information security analyst, ethical hacker, digital forensics investigator, cyber threat intelligence analyst, cloud security engineer, security consultant and incident response specialist.  Entry-level salaries routinely reach the upper five figures and six figures, while experienced cybersecurity professionals and executives often command substantially higher compensation.


University leaders say cybersecurity cannot be separated from another technology rapidly transforming research and industry: artificial intelligence.


Jerry Miller, interim chair of the Department of Computer and Information Sciences, said recent faculty workshops have demonstrated how Cybersecurity & AI is becoming embedded throughout the university's teaching and research enterprise.


FAMU's work  is being strengthened by a partnership with the University of California, San Diego, giving students and researchers access to the National Research Platform, a distributed cyberinfrastructure that provides cloud and exascale computing resources, including thousands of graphical processing units capable of supporting computationally intensive research.


The expanded computing capacity accelerates projects ranging from climate modeling and cybersecurity research to healthcare innovation and drug discovery, while providing students with access to computing resources typically available only at major research institutions.


By coupling nationally recognized cybersecurity education with expanding investments in cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and high-performance computing, FAMU is positioning itself not simply to respond to the future of technology, but to help shape it.
