As the old saying goes, "you can fool some of the people some of the time, but..." With respect to the 2% pay raise proposal being advanced by the FAMU administration, it seems the FAMU faculty falls in that BUT category.
The eagle eye faculty informs Rattler Nation, "the BOT's proposal does not really constitute a pay raise of 2% since it is allegedly retroactive to Jan. 1, 2006 not to August 8,2005, the approximate starting date of our contracts. (For example, a faculty member whose current annual salary is $50,000 would receive a pay raise of only $500 based on an effective date of Jan. 1, 2006 rather than a pay raise of $1,000 if the effective date was August 8, 2005).
In terms of overall faculty morale, the faculty is smitten. "It's unfortunate that the BOT awarded, and the Interim President, accepted a hefty bonus and pay increase before addressing the needs of the faculty and staff. It was totally inappropriate and showed arrogant and selfish leadership. If things are tight, the leader should be the first to sacrifice."
The faculty has served notice that they will not have the wool pulled over its eyes and have notified the BOT's Chief Negotiator of their willingness to commence negotiating the BOT's offer not to simply discuss it as the BOT has requested.
Also, it hasn't slipped by anyone that FAMU begins a new fiscal year on July 1. Stay tuned there's sure to be more on this story...
I wonder if the BOT also discussed the enrollment crisis and recruiting in their "emergency meeting" telephone call this week?
Maybe the faculty just do not want a raise. Has that thought crossed your mind? I don't hear them complaining about not getting a raise.
ReplyDeleteFear of repercussion keeps the facuilty quiet. The low enrollment and the fear of a layoff checkmate the faculty. FEAR is Bryant's weapon of choice to control the faculty.
ReplyDeleteThere is power in numbers. If the faculty decided to come together for once and speak with one forceful voice, what can Castell/BOT do? Fire all of them.
ReplyDeleteShe could fire the ones without tenure...
ReplyDeleteThe tenured faculty should be leading this battle but they are nowhere to be found. No nutz, no glory.
You are right. Where are the tenured faculty?
ReplyDeleteThe Faculty Union, the FAMU UFF, has NOT been quiet about the faculty and other members of the collective bargaining unit not receiving a raise from the University. In fact, the FAMU UFF has raised this issue at every Board of Trustee meeting for the past year and notified the local and state press of this sad state of affairs.!!! Moreover, the union has conducted demonstrations (marching, carrying placards, making speeches) at the last two BOT meetings. Stay tuned. It ain't over till it's over.!!
ReplyDeleteBravo to the last (faculty) poster. I hope the faculty will do some drastic to draw attention to the sad state of affairs at FAMU. Dr. Bryant has got to go!!!
ReplyDeleteMaybe the faculty needs to storm the president's office and sit-in protest.
ReplyDeleteHow about we all sit-in until, the BOT names a permanent president?
ReplyDeleteYou got that much vacation time built up from work?
