Florida A&M University physicists in a lab at Innovation Park are experimenting with using lasers to produce plasma gases that would detect radioactive isotopes quicker and at a safer distance.
"One of my goals is to demonstrate the feasibility of the technology within a year," said FAMU physics professor Lewis Johnson, director of the Laser Remote Sensing Laboratory.
The United States or United Nations could use the technology to nail down what's occurring across international borders - whether it is North Korea rattling its nuclear sabres or Iran advertising its nuclear development ambitions.
