Class of '57 grad reflects on FAMUs past and present

Palm Beach Post columnist Stebbins Jefferson writes, "last weekend, Florida A&M University gave me a medal and a certificate in a gold-embossed folder. It wasn't for any outstanding achievement, but simply for surviving and caring enough to return to Tallahassee for the 50th reunion of the class of '57."
"As I left the campus, I passed pharmacy graduates with their families exiting their commencement ceremony. The crowd looked like a multiethnic United Nations. How wonderful to see that the university that was my bridge over segregated waters is now serving all races with distinction. Hence, though admittedly serious problems exist, they do not justify reducing our institution to a mere appendage of Florida State University," Jefferson wrote.
"Such a solution never would be considered if the problematic issues of the two schools were reversed. Let the word go forth from my generation of survivors to state leaders: Any plans to further limit or cancel FAMU's independence would be an insult to all Floridians who value nurturing higher education as a passport to a better future."

These are some serious-looking scholars. I KNOW they have to be scholars, four-pointers, Phi Beta Kappas and summa cum laudes all mixed in together. Ain' a "C" student to be had amongst 'em. Those are some serious profiles. Plus, tuition had to have been about twelve cents per credit hour back in the day when this photo was shot. As a matter of fact, I bet you could have taken eighteen hours for $2.29 cent. Dang.
ReplyDeleteNow, that's history.
ReplyDeleteCould we please stop the fearmongering about being sapped up by FSU. That is old and played out! It would not be economically feasible (i.e. fed dollars) or politically smart. Please! The law school has reopened and we continue to screw up. How 'bout takin responsibility for our own mess ups. Let's not blame FSU and promote urban legend about them coming across the tracks. The good ol boys of his classmate Humphrey created and continue to keep up the crap.
ReplyDeleteOK, RN, We need some new stuff here. We realize that much of the juice is on the downside, but you know, of course, we depend on you to keep us informed. Any new stuff going on?

Stebbins Jefferson is a lady. So what's your point? Read you Florida Legislature History book. It's a fact that Sen. Bob Graham, then state legislator wrote a bill to merge FAMU with FSU.
Damn, put it in a book and folks like you will forever be in the dark.

I do read and I do know about the "expansion" of Florida's university system. Come on Bob Graham????? Back in the 1970s???? You mean Bob Graham, supporter of Gwen Cherry???? AND IS THIS THE SAME BOB GRAHAM WHO SUPPORTED HUMPHREYS and let him run amuck with no accountability and play the race card before the then Board of Regents when he was called to task? .... AS WAS PREVIOUSLY SAID THIS !&%**## IS OLD AND PLAYED OUT. FAMU must stop playing the FSU boogeyman card and get to workin! the house in order.
NOW THAT IS HISTORY!!! TRUE DAT!!

ReplyDeleteWith Cast-hell on the run from the BOT, and her public appearances in and around campus on the deep low. Its hard to come up with BLOCKBUSTER dirt.
She's just about messed up everything she can. No?
Hey, but we gotcha covered. We'll scourer the Universe (ity) for waste, fraud, and abuse.
Seems FAMU is more worried about everything around it, when it should be worried about everything from inside. FAMU is about to become the smallest university in the state. This is not a bad thing. 30 to 40 percent of FAMU's students should not be enrolled in a 4 year institution. Community Colleges would serve them better and free up money for FAMU to give a proper education to those students that are qualified.
ReplyDeleteDa Rattler @ 4:25: You know I love you, and you know I know you're always on it. Thanks, love.
ReplyDelete6:43--FAMU's "inside" is actually all around us, which makes it "inside." What are you talking about?
