Florida Classic payout nearly doubles
May 21, 2007

According to our sources, FAMU and Bethune-Cookman were each able to take home $1,400,190.76 from the 2006 Florida Classic. The payout to each school this year is said to be up about $600,000 from the previous year's payout, and that's no Mickey Mouse change there.
Last year was the first year that both schools took over the operations and management of the Classic and created the non profit Florida Classic Consortium.
While the game was played in November of 2006, it seems that the Consortium took its sweet time paying bills, adding up the final tallies, and cutting checks to each school which we understand was just completed this month. Overall, the Consortium is claiming that it increased revenues by 67.1 percent.
The Consortium met last Thursday at Bethune-Cookman to begin planning for the 2007 game.

ReplyDeleteThere are three ways we can look at this issue.
1. The payout of $1.4 million per team puts us at the top of the heap in "bowl game" payouts, under 4-5 BCS bowl games (see list below).
2. The overhead must be tremendous putting on this game with 72,000+ fans. How does the TV revenue come into play and shouldn't we go to a pay-for-view approach if we are earning, say $125,000 each for ESPNU televising the game?
3. I'll like to see the entire financial report for the Florida and Atlanta Classics. Someone is walking away with the loot and its not FAMU, BC-U and TSU.

ReplyDeleteDid you know that the Florida Classic Consortium is a DSO of FAMU? Did you also know that the books for this DSO has not been audited since its inception (2005-planning seed money).
Did you also know that the FL Auditor General has questioned the operations of this DSO?
BTW, why was Castell at this meeting when she was specifically told not to attend?
Peace, keep up the good works on behind of FAMU!
I'm assuming that is $1.4 million AFTER expenses?
ReplyDeleteIf so, that is a nice payout for a well attended, yet poor TV rating, game. I think the FLA Consortium needs to focus on negotiating getting this puppy on something better than ESPNU. I say go for the gusto and try for ABC.
I mean it is Disney, right?
ReplyDeleteit is sponsored by Disney, yet Disney decides to bury it's only Title sponsored college football game on "the U". Strange.
