Ammons dines with students

Lunch time dinners in the cafeteria got a surprise visit from FAMU President James Ammons, yesterday, who strolled in with Student Affairs VP Roland Gaines to grab a bite to eat. Ammons and Gaines visited with students and dined on fried chicken, salad, mash potatoes and blackeye peas.

"The fried chicken brings everyone out," said Kyle Washington.

On Monday, Ammons, and members of his leadership team, walked across the "Set" to dine in the "President's Dinning Room", Washington said.

  2. Good to see that the Prez is still out meeting and greeting folks, being among the people.

  3. Wow. That's different than our past few leaders. We'll just skip Castell, but remember Henry Lewis III resigned because he had tried for 9 months to meet with the Prez, but Gainous couldn't find time to meet with the Dean of its flagship program.

Seriously, I know its a long-haul race, but Ammons' efforts to find out exactly what is going on at the university from all angles is impressive. How can you serve the students, if you don't know what their issues are. Keep up the good work Dr. Ammons.

  4. Wow, where was I? Our student organization has been trying to meet with him for months. We've offered to take him to dinner, breakfast, lunch, meet on the weekends and we've gotten nothing but the shuffle!

We do appreciate and recognize the work that he had to do and is currently working on to ensure the future of the university. However, if his schedule allows him to make cameo appearance surely he could honor our request to meet for 15 minutes during, breakfast, lunch, dinner or some other time of his choosing.

  5. Dr. Ammons has had open forums with faculty, staff, and students every month. He doesn't have to sit down for a meal with every one of the 200+ student organizations on campus in order for students to reach him.

Additionally, if you have a specific concern that needs to be addressed immediately, you should begin by going up the chain-of-command in the relevant university division.

  7. 6:08,

Dr. Ammons' lunch in cafeteria lasted much longer than 15mins. He was there for over an hour. He was there to eat and not hold a forum. However, he was nice enough talk to all students that approached him and invited them to sit down at his table.

The man has manners and he listens. I should know, I was one of the students who talked to him yesterday. And, after we finished talking, he asked me if I was still glad I was a student at FAMU?

He actually cares and wants to make things better.

  8. Yo 6:43

Ammons has been here how long now? and he has only had 2 forums with faculty! My math says he has been here 3.5 months. How does 2 forums in that time say he has met with faculty every month?

  9. 10:40, don't "be" trying to start any mess up in here. Dr. Ammons has done an exceptional job since he's been here, and I think we all know that. He's only ONE person, and he can only be in one place at the time. Give the man a break. His presidential forums are a great beginning for everyone. Some folks just want to complain about something, anything, doesn't matter. Be cool. Things are going to work out. Just don't start your mess "up in here."

  10. According to the TDO and the schedule of the forums, he has met with the students at least as many times as he has met with the faculty and staff. Now, weather that is one, two or thirty, that is more than either Drs. Bryant or Gainous ever did combined. I would echo the sentiments of one of the other posters, if you have an issue go through the chain of command. One thing that we want (as FAMUIANS) is for our presidents to be supermen/women. We want them to be everywhere at one time, be able to solve everyone's problems and continue to bring in money, faculty and students to the school. This is impossible for one person to do. I say Kudos to Dr. Ammons for trying but its unrealistic for anyone to believe that he can meet everyone’s request (if he plans to doing everything that he has set out to do.) If he does indeed try, you will find him out sick more times than not because there is only so much the human body can take.

  11. Ammons is working himself sick, literally. The TDO is saying he needs to take it easy. 3.5 months and 2 forums is waaaaaaaaaaaay more than most presidents would give you. Hopefully he will work just as hard when its time for a Capital Campaign.

  12. There are haters who surf these MBs to instigate and perpetuate negativism. I believe that it emanates from a deep seeded jealousy of FAMU and FAMUANS. Pray for them. They need help because FAMU is on the way back from the depths and is rising to it's rightful place. We are not degrading or detracting from any other in order to make up look better. We are striving to be the best that we were created to be.

  18. Dr. Ammons needs to straiten out the athletic department. Before it's to late. Mr. Townsend has embarrassed the University with his scaming tactics and stealing money.Townsend has stole enough money from FAMU to retire in Hawaii.
