Akini Akini scored 18 points as Florida A&M beat Carver College 86-83 Monday night.

In coach Eugene Harris' debut, FAMU shot 46 percent from the field, and outscored the Cougars 42-22 in the paint.

Akini was 8-of-12 from the field, and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. Lamar Twitty added 14 points and Leslie Robinson scored 13 for the Rattlers (1-0, 0-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference).

FAMU jumped out to a 21-8 lead, and kept Carver College at a distance until the Cougars used a 17-6 run to cut the lead to one at 80-79 with just under a minute to play. FAMU responded by finishing the game on a 7-4 run.

Kent Dorsey finished with a game high 26 points for Carver College (1-5), while shooting over 50 percent from the field and grabbing seven rebounds. Reggie Anderson added 16 points for the Cougars.

The Rattlers schedule gets a little more challenging this week as they face the University of Colorado on Thursday in Madison,WI.

Of note...
Late last week, Coach Harris was able to hire his assistant coaches John "Johnnie" Jones, former head coach at South Carolina State in the 1980s, and Reggie Sharp, a former standout at Auburn. Sharp came to FAMU from the staff at Mississippi Valley State.

  1. For a guy who claims that the MEAC ain't no competition and he is focused on top talent, its odd that he's pulling in his coaching staff from MEAC/SWAC schools, SCSU and MVSU.

  2. At this late date, where did u expect him to get a coaching staff from --- the Big Ten????

  3. 10:20, can the man just win a game before we start bashing him? we're all ready hiding in the shadows, waiting for Harris to stumble. i say, give him a minute (or two, even). i agree with 11:27. at this late date in the season, when other programs have been in place all year long, we're lucky to get whatever. goodness gracious. let the man tie his sneaker laces, first before the unraveling and stink comments come rolling in.

  4. Pulling names from the thefamurattlers.com huh? Too bad even they have the roster wrong. Akini's last name is Adkins (Akini Adkins, not Akini Akini lol) and Leslie prefers to be called by his nickname LC as well as Ernest Maul, who goes by EJ, just for future reference. :)

  6. Actually, the Tallahassee Democrat said that Akini legally changed his last name to Akini and explained why.

  7. This is the dude from 10:20.

I fully support every coach at FAMU. But Harris needs to understand what it means to basically insult your own conference. Even if the MEAC is garbage in basketball compared to everyone else, coaches don't just come out and say that. Then there is the hypocrisy of his going right back out and hiring MEAC personnel to be on his coaching staff. The other coaches and teams may put a little extra umph into playing FAMU b/c of that.

I love his position that the MEAC ain't no competition and he is setting his sites on the best there is. FAMU does that in all things, striving to be the best school, not just the best black school.
