Back to the drawing board: Broadway says no!

Grambling State head coach Rod Broadway has turned down an offer to become head coach at FAMU. FAMU officials has reportedly offered to pay Broadway at least $55,000 more than he currently makes at Grambling. Still, that wasn't enough for FAMU to lure Broadway away from the Louisiana school.

FAMU must now shift to "plan B".

“We’re pleased Rod Broadway has chosen to remain head coach,” Grambling athletics director Troy Mathieu said. “As he heads into year two, we hope to continue to build on the momentum of this season’s Western Division title.”

Broadway, who signed a four-year deal at GSU last winter, has a new contract that will keep him at Grambling the details of which aren't immediately known. Broadway had also interviewed for a since-filled head coaching position at Duke.

But all along Broadway insisted he was happy at Grambling.

"Nobody listened," he said. "Everybody had me doing this and doing that. They all had their own opinion. I've said all along that I think this is a good situation. You can win here."

Broadway compiled a 33-11 record at NCCU that included back-to-back Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association titles in 2005 and 2006.

  1. I'm glad he's going to remain at Grambling. Dr. Ammons wasn't able to hijack the man with the lure of a mesely $55,000. That's not enough $$ for him to leave Grambling. Plus, his staying at Grambling shows that he's a wise man who looked beyond a few $$ and saw the big picture and the tumultuous nature of athletics at FAMU and made a sound decision based on, I'm sure, conversations he had with his family and intimate circle of professionals at Grambling. His decision says to me that he is a man of integrity, and that $$ can't buy everything. I'm glad he decided to stay.

  2. FAMU athletics is no longer in a tumultuous situation. The department as new permanent leadership and is stable. FAMU will attract a top-rate coach. Life goes on.

  3. FAMU athletics is still in a tumultuous situation. As an insider, I've been privvy to reports, documentation, numbers/figures, and committee personnel. Believe me when I say that the appointment of a permanent AD was a move in the right direction; it does not, however, remove all of the infractions incurred over the past several years. "Permanent leadership" has, of course, its own reward, but it doesn't resolve all of the problems inherent in that division. I still say that Broadway did the correct (and noble) thing by remaining at the school where he has started something good. It says a lot about his integrity and wisdom to look beyond a few bucks to come to an "iffy" situation. FAMU will, in short order, attract the kind of coach it deserves, but for now a good man has made a wise decision, and I, for one, applaud him for the insight.

  4. Plus, a department does not necessarily become "stable" on the appointment of a single person. Stability comes when a number of forces working together for the common good engage in a common goal, task, and/or agenda. The new AD is in a leadership role in the division, but he does not automatically stabilize a situation just because he has arrived and is occupying a seat in an office.

  5. It will behoove you to better stabilize the department by giving the boot to the people that are collecting heafty pay and not producing any work or contributing to the rise of the athletic department. When Townsend went they should have deleted D. Robinson, C. Ellison, A. Ellison, C. Smith, R.Raines, M. Jones, E. Wilcox... they left the heap of the mess.....

yea, and why are they still there.

look you just freed up $450,000 plus in salary....

  6. This kind of stuff happens all the time. The University of Michigan was turned down a few times before it finally got a new coach. I am sure that FAMU will get a quality replacement.

  7. Folks calm down. Patience Grasshopper. Patience. Dr. Ammons has this under control.

We are charting new territories and it has gotten everyone in a tizzy. The new administration will get this done. Just thank your lucky stars they had several back-up plans.

For Broadway to consider an offer from FAMU and interview with Duke; was just a ploy to let GSU know that his stock was about to go up. I think he used both Duke and FAMU as a bargaining chip in LA. I don't blame him for that. However, if he doesn't produce next year, those Tigers may hang him from a tree by his tail. AND, I do mean that literally.

  8. 10:56,
    Good insight!

  9. $55,000 hardly seems a "bargaining chip" to me. I would think perhaps twice that might be, but 55gs? Don't think so.

  10. I'm sure it wasnt $55K when the last coach was making $130K. I'm glad Broadway stayed because it's obvious that he cant win the BIG ones that count (BC and SCG), and he wasnt successful in the playoffs as a head coach. The paper said negotiation breakdowns were over scheduling and staff; not over salary. Scheduling and staff decisions are executed by the AD and not the HC. This just confirms the stories about Hayes and Broadway's suspect relationship while at NCC.
