FAMU Police Department arrested Teria Coverson, a FAMU employee, for allegedly stealing $55,344 from discovered two community clinics operated by FAMU's College of Pharmacy yesterday morning. The clinics are located at 872 Orange Ave. and 438 W. Brevard St. in Tallahassee.

Coverson, an administrative assistant and an employee for nearly five years, was identified as being responsible for the alleged discrepancies that resulted in unaccounted cash and checks of $55,344 after FAMU conducted a review of cash management practices at the two clinics. It was discovered that numerous cash deposits did not reflect true and accurate deposit amounts in relation to actual amounts received by the clinics.

"We have a zero tolerance for this kind of behavior," said FAMU President James H. Ammons. "It is important that we have a system and process in place to make sure that we are able to uncover these kinds of discrepancies. We want to be accountable for every dollar. I commend the Division of Audit and Compliance and the FAMU Police Department for conducting a thorough investigation."

Coverson was released after posting $10,000 bail from the Leon County Jail. In addition to grand theft, she also faces a charge of insufficient funds. FAMU moved immediately to terminate her employment with university.

Police Chief Calvin Ross said Coverson had been creating bogus deposit slips when she went to the cashier's office. "She deposited some of the amount, but not the total amount," Ross said.

The audit covered a period of two and a half years. It revealed that the illegal action had been going on for 10 months, from November 2006 to September 2007, he said.

The College of Pharmacy had requested the audit because they suspected something was wrong.

  1. This smells bad for FAMU Pharmacy. Why did an administrative assistant have so much control over such much money? Dr. Ammons and Chief Ross need to look for the real criminals in this case!!!

  2. Good job, FAMU! Catch all of the thieves. Let's see if the Democrap spins this to make all of the university employees, staff, and students sound like thieves.

  3. need to catch those crooks that are on the payroll and not teaching their classes. Taking leave for the whole semester and putting the pressure on the rest of the faculty. That is the real crime and they are still getting paid. Have HR look into that.

  4. We have one of the best pharmacy programs in the country, and this sort of thing CANNOT be tolerated at FAMU. I hope that she and anyone else that had a hand in this situation are punished to the extent of the law. And for that matter, continue to clean house and ensure that similar offenses are not occurring elsewhere in FAMU's system.

  7. The money WAS NOT TAKEN FROM FAMU SCHOOL OF PHARMACY. The money was stolen from the FAMU pharmacy store located off campus. Has nothing to do with the Pharmacy school. People steal everyday from companies all across the nation. We definately don't need this bad press.
Not all FAMU employees are crooks and thieves. I hope the president gets rid of all parties involved in scandel at FAMU ASAP.

  9. Really?? Look for the real thieves in this scandal. Every month there are statements to give an account of all monies deposited and withdrawn. Why did it take 10 months to uncover this? I am sure that the bookkeeper should have records from the BANK. Or was this just another oversight on taxpayers time??? FAMU is trying to find a scapegoat and there is none better than an assistant whether than someone with clout.

  10. I see a PROFOUND pattern as I read this blog. People who come on to banter when something wrong and attempt to call the problems "generationally, symptomatic" and the success stories, if addressed at all, "sporadic, merely eventful". As an alumnus, it is clear that for whatever reason, there are those who are hell-bent on seeking FAMU's demise. It is puzzling. This new generation of FAMUans, both faculty and students alike, need to understand this organized effort an raise up to a new standard. Media like the Democrat and SPTU use their platform to exploit and hyper-proportionize the negatives. Don't give them the opportunity! This one incident does not lessen my resolve of greatness and great things coming out of my university. I still plan to send my children to the Hill. There's no other place like it..Protect the Legacy...

  11. from the article --- "a FAMU employee, for allegedly stealing $55,344 from discovered two community clinics operated by FAMU's College of Pharmacy yesterday morning. The clinics are located at 872 Orange Ave. and 438 W. Brevard St. in Tallahassee."

Please note that these are COMMUNITY CLINICS which serve mostly indigent and medically needy population. The COPPS is responsible for the OVERALL ADMINISTRATION. There are Physicians, Pharmacists, Nurses., Technicians, and other professional staff and personnel at these sites.

Unless the COPPS performs DAILY AUDITS of ACCOUNTS --- such action is possible. HELL -- there are people who steal from banks and stores when there is a CAMERA IN THEIR FACE!!!!!!!!
