After weeks of fundraising, the Beta Alpha Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. defeated the Kappa Sigma Chapter at Florida State University in a charity competition in hopes to gain a spot on "Oprah's Big Give."
The Deltas raised a total of $6,100.70 through raffle ticket sales, a basketball tournament, a community talent show and several outside monetary donations.
For Bethany Jones, the Beta Alpha Chapter of DST president and past fundraising chair, the competition was a different experience for the chapter.
"In all competitions you do go in with the mentality to win. However, this one was a little different," Jones said. "We were in unfamiliar territory because it was not like a step show competition. We competed against another organization at FSU that we knew nothing about."
Gary Wordlaw, general manager of ABC 27, presented the FAMU Deltas with a check for $6,000. The Deltas will be using the money for their Delta Success Fund.
The Kappa Sigma chapter received a check for $4,000.
