Nothing to cheer about !

The FAMU cheerleaders have been kicking up a storm of controversy recently over what they described to the FAMUAN as a "missed opportunity", because circumstances didn't permit them to participate in this year's MEAC cheerleading competition.

Rattler Nation has learned that the cheerleaders accompanied the FAMU Pep band to the tournament with the full understanding that when, and if, the basketball team lost that they would return home. It seems the MEAC requires teams and pep bands to checkout the hotel and return home after losing, since the conference picks up a portion of the travel expense of both. The Rattlers lost on Thursday night and the band, team, and cheerleaders returned back to Tallahassee on Friday. The MEAC cheerleading competition was on Saturday morning.

But none of that is neither here nor there.

Has anybody actually seen our cheerleaders this year? If you had, you'd know that they are a lot of things, but cheerleaders ain't one of them. This years bunch is anything BUT a hype squad.

At football games, the FAMU cheerleaders have been routinely out cheered by the little girl cheerleaders, whose voices can somehow be heard at the top of the stadium. The official FAMU cheerleaders, on the other hand, are hardly ever heard past the first three or four rows.

At basketball games, this fall, the FAMU cheerleaders spent the majority of the games with their hands on their hips waiting on the band to play, before they started dancing. They rarely got the crowd pumped up or inspired fans to get into the game.

So, if the cash strapped athletic department didn't spend money they don't have so that this sorry bunch could participate in a competition at the MEAC basketball tournament, fine. The MEAC competition was reserved for cheerleaders, not cheer followers!

  1. Wow, that was kinda harsh. But if we don't have the funds we can't spend money not available.

  3. Oouch! I guess keeping it real doesn't have to feel good. I saw them only once at homecoming and they seemed on par with the squads from the 80's and 90's. Well written points, though.

  6. Off Topic, but does anyone know why WCTV is not posting any clips of FAMU Spring Football practice? Are they not covering it on the local news, or is it just not making the internet. This is one of the worst years of local coverage in a number of years from both the Democrat and WCTV!!!

  8. While there is always room for improvement I must say that the FAMU cheerleaders are far better than squads in past years. While you may not hear their voices past the first three rows...you will definitely see them tumble and perform dynamic stunts.

All of the members of the FAMU cheerleaders can tumble...this is outstanding considering many blacks squads are unable to get a full squad of tumblers.

These girls give up a lot to be cheerleaders. They basically volunteer their time to practice, perform and travel to FAMU basketball and football games...and they do it all with no scholarships.

Instead of being so negative if you have opinions approach the coach...I have and she was very open and willing to listen to my concerns and suggestions about the girls.

I felt the need to respond not because I am cheerleader...because I am not, but because I have friends and a sibling who were black cheerleaders. They are often overlooked and unappreciated.

We need to uplift and not be so negative.

  9. They(and I love 'em) could be heaps better. So could the King and Queen of Orange and Green! I was disappointed this past season. I understand their position though. Do they get to recruit? Prolly not! They NEED UNIFORMS. It's embarassing to see them in public wearing the practice shorts. Like its cute. They have to pay for half of what they get. And what's with there not being official media for them and the band. For everyone? The university needs to bolster our product and market the FAMU (A&M) BRAND. The yarbook should be re-introduced as well.Look good Rattlers. Get in Orange and Green for the events, maybe the cheerleaders will do the same. After all, the best leaders are effective followers.

  10. Simply sounds as though there needs to be some sort of a "Shout Out!" for all of our former Cheerleaders to band together, and collectively come up with some funds, and or cheers, and help get the current squad up to speed.

For example ... The School is implementing a new "1,000 Strikes" Fundraising Initiative to raise funds for the School. Maybe those of you out here with "love and charity" for the Cheerleaders need to simply direct your monies in THAT direction.

That way, the Cheerleaders will have the funds they will need for whatever they may need - or want - be it additional clothing and uniforms to represent the School to all you all's "high standards & specifications" ... or even to cover their additional travel expenses during the MEAC Tournament.

  11. This year's cheerleaders didn't need any additional funds, what they need most was the common sense to do what they were supposed to do --- open their mouths and cheer!

    That don't cost nothing.
