Many students are returning to campus only to find that there is "no room at the inn". FAMU housing officials are experiencing a housing shortage brought on by an increasing number of students wanting to stay on campus and the fact that no new dorm rooms have been built in the past 8 years. The housing crisis is particularly severe for Black males wanting to live on campus with Sampson and Young Halls being closed.
As of Friday, there was a growing waiting list of about 100 males seeking housing and 35 female students.
Dorm officials have scampered to try to add beds to meet the increased demand, by adding a third bed to some rooms in Paddyfoote. "Really, there's only so much we can do," said one Housing official.
happens every year, and it's too bad that both Young and Sampson have been shuttered for so long. Turn those buildings into offices and let's get with the State to build new dorm buildings.
ReplyDeleteHey, they need to shutdown gibbs hall too. I saw that mess yesterday and what a dump. FAMU should be ashamed for letting students stay there.
ReplyDeleteThanks to Gainous FAMU Housing has been paying Booth properties.
ReplyDeleteStudents and these DUMB parents are simply out of there minds when it comes to type of housing provided on campus....1:56 any student who wishes can live off campus in spite of the "rule" that freshmen have to stay on campus, i.e. waivers? Therefore if these student and their parents 80% of whom are on FAID ( student welfare) dont like it they can pay to stay in an apt. Furthermore, when FAMU gets its self in the 21st century then it can raise the funds to bulid new dorms and when this happens the same complaining, ungrateful, I am entitled kids will tear them up in two years! Yet, when they live in the "other" man apts. they keep it like its they life on the line! Or he makes them pay! Stop Complaining and do something!
ReplyDeleteI thought this happened on Spelman's campus. This used to happen to us all
ReplyDeleteof the time! And we would always have a surplus of over 500 students(our campus isn't NEARLY as large as yours). I had no idea.
3:26PM... Sorry, but my family is in the 20%. Even if I was in the 80%, what the HELL does that have to do with the university not taking care of their dorms? Please explain, moron!!
ReplyDeleteAlso, my nephew who is on a full academic scholarship is not an "I am entitled kid". I think you need to go check yourself and stop running off at the mouth!!! Oh, I forgot one small detail; I financially support FAMU both athletically & academically.
CAN SOMEBODY PLEASE TELL ME WHY IN LIVING HELL ARE THEY ADDING A THIRD BED TO PADDYFOTE...IT'S NOT EVEN THAT BIG..JUST WALK IN A ROOM AND SPREAD YOUR ARMS OPEN AND YOU'LL TOUCH BOTH WALLS.
ReplyDeleteIt's sad the residence halls are in this condition. Sampson, Young and Polkinghorne Village have remained closed for over 4 years. Recruiting students, but the housing is not available. Please don't let another year past and those dorms are still wasting away!! These facilities are historical markers!!! Apply for State Grants for renovations!!
ReplyDeleteGo visit other HBCUs and find out how to get it done!
Ahh Polkinghorne.....good times.....though they didn't let people know you had to bring your own AC.
ReplyDelete4:26 start a ousing fund with the FAMU Foundation and restrict the funds to only a housing buliding fund! Like the black church! And by the way you can do this I know!
ReplyDelete10:45am.. dude, be black and strong, Change is the on the way!! That's the only thing i can offer you. :)
ReplyDeleteWe need to improve the dorms. Although I would not be against having one or two " less than perfect" dorms for those who prove they cannot take care of other people's property. In fact I would not be against charging people with destruction of state property, if they damage the dormitories.
ReplyDeleteCheck here for housing-

You know i lived in Young hall the last year it was open, and i actually saw nothing wrong with the dorm. Besides from the rare bathroom flood, it was adequate enough for me. I remember they said they closed them because it didnt meet student expectations. I have graduated 3 years after living there and the fact that they are still closed is sad
ReplyDeleteWow, I had no idea that Young and Sampson have been closed for so long. Visited the campus summer 07, check out all the new buildings. I stayed in Young freshman year in 1993. 3 beds in the foote. Get the heck out of here. They barly fit two. Its kinda sad but I did see a bunch of apt. buildings around campus that was not there when I was there. Plus I am sure folks there are still renting rooms and such so put cats on the meal plan and find a way. Get a 20 hr/week job or work study if u not on the meal plan and get some assistance from public aid some food stamps. Make it happen and get that education.
ReplyDeletehow da hewl are they gonna add a third bed to Paddyfoote?
