The Crestview (FL) City Council voted this past Monday to transfer title to a 39,000 square foot downtown building to Florida A&M University to operate a proposed branch of its pharmacy school.
“I think we sowed the seeds for something great for the city of Crestview,” council member Charles Baugh said after the 3-1 vote.
Even the one nay vote, cast by council member Linda Parker, who said she supported the concept of a FAMU campus in Crestview but did not support the terms of the proposal. She had urged the council to seek a lease agreement.
The 2008 Legislature gave FAMU $2.5 million to develop a Rural Diversity Health Care program in Crestview.
FAMU expects to begin "major renovations" to the new property in October 2009, and open the branch in August 2010.
An online poll in the Crestview Bulletin newspaper showed that 91% of Crestview residents favored the council's actions with 71% strongly in favor. Only 1% were against.
