After turning out more than 1,000 Rattlers on the first day of early voting, FAMU student leaders are gearing up for another ambitious voter mobilization initiative. One day before precincts open on Nov. 4, the FAMU-led “Sleep Out the Vote Coalition” will gather thousands of local college students together in anticipation of national election day. Then, on the next morning, they will march to the polls.

“There are a large number of people, like politicians, that take student voters for granted,” said Asia McFarland, president of the Vote Coalition’s FAMU branch. "If we can get students to the polls, we can prove them wrong. We have to get students to realize the power that they have.”

“Sleep Out the Vote” began in 2004 and was held again in 2006. This year’s event will start at 10 p.m. on Nov. 3 in the Tallahassee-Leon County Civic Center. Students from FAMU, Florida State University, and Tallahassee Community College are all invited there to eat, dance, and enjoy games.

McFarland, who also serves as president pro tempore of FAMU’s Student Senate, expects at least 4,000 students to participate. However, her ultimate goal is to pack the Civic Center to capacity. The facility’s arena seats more than 13,800.

FAMU President James Ammons will address the students on Nov. 4 and then join them in their walk to the precincts. Local elected officials have also been invited to participate.

  1. FYI, you can only vote ONCE. The system, at least in Broward county, only allows voters to vote once. The LARGER the turnout for "EARLY VOTING" the BETTER. Trust that if you get everyone you know in early, the less likely it will be for them to NOT vote. People always slip thru or step into the cracks otherwise. I encourage all early voters to wear their stickers and Obama 'nailia to remind some to go vote NOW! or to rub it in their faces that you didn't wait and allow the polls to close withOUT YOUR VOTE! Please, DO NOT be confused or misled by "RECORD TURNOUT" numbers or that early voting alludes to "PLENTY of TIME to GO VOTE". That just means that some are taking this serious NOW, for a CHANGE as WE ALL should! Go HARD go NOW BRING EVERYONE you know. Don't sleep on this FAMily. My senior class was larger than W's margin back in 2000. We know our late freinds, we have to make them feel as if they're being left out and behind to get them there just in the nick of time. And the TIME IS NOW!

  2. Well I do believe that's a general rule that you can only vote once so..oh nevermind.

This is an exciting venture our students are orchestrating. I'm proud of them.

    Go Rattlers!
