When the French peasants were starving, Marie Antoinette said, "Let them eat cake!" And while foreclosures, unemployment and bankruptcies are at record highs, the Republican National Committee says "Let them go shopping!" As long as "they" are Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin and family.
In the latest Sarah Palin revelation, we learn that the Republican National Committee has spent more than $150,000 on clothes and accessories for Palin and her family..
The expenditures began early last month, soon after Palin was picked by John McCain to be his running mate.
Palin frequently wears expensive designer clothes on the campaign trail now, points out CBS News correspondent Meg Oliver.
Spending records filed with the Federal Election Commission and obtained by Politico show the RNC paid for "campaign accessories" from upscale department stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue, where nearly $50,000 was spent, Neiman Marcus, $75,000, and $4,700 for hair and makeup.
Sources indicate Palin's family have also benefited from Republican noblise largese, racking up similar shopping trips. Track and Bristol have to be stylish when campaigning in Boise, ya know.
Doesn't it at all seem ironic that the "conservative" party of "fiscal (ir)responsibility" that blasted John Edwards' haircuts would "earmark" ridiculous amounts at Saks and Neiman's, doing their best to transform Caribou Barbie into Malibu Barbie. But you know what they say. You can put MAC lipstick on a pig, but it is a still a ....
Not every "soccer mom" or Joe "the Plumber" wears Manolo Blahniks.
Here's a snapshot of what $150,000 a month buys

Palin in her ruby red shoes is akin to Dorothy in kansas who revels in fantasyland.
ReplyDeleteDorothy exposed the phony wizard who had captured Oz with his eloquent smoke and mirrors rhetoric and she defeated two wicked witches.... interesting analogy
ReplyDeleteWe're hearing crickets from the republicans who frequent this board. Come out, come out , where ever you are !!!!
ReplyDeleteHow much was that HAND MADE SUIT that Barack wore during the Domocrat Convention. How much were the designer pantsuits that Hillary wears.
ReplyDeleteGET REAL! $150,000.00 is nothing. They spend more than that on these fashion makeover shows on TV.
Like Palin or not, do not become hypocritical about this expense. Compare apples to apples.
These hip hop rock stars have raggedy jeans that cost thousands.
But Barrack pays for his own suits !!!
ReplyDeleteThis just is...
If Palin's $150,000 shopping spree had Republicans disgusted, then the report that her makeup stylist cost $22,800 for the first two weeks of October should have them livid. The stylist, Amy Strozzi, was apparently paid more than any other McCain staffer during that period.
Michelle gets help from Oprah's stylist. How big of a campaign contribution is that? Its awesome. I'd take it.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, campaigns have wide latitude in how to spend contributions. They can buy balloons, confetti, cigarettes (to give to homeless), or whatever they think will help them win the election.
If Mccain wants to use his funds to dress the only non-millionaire on either ticket, that certainly is within his rights.
Besides, what man among us has not fantasized about playing Barbie dress-up?
9:26, you thing the comment before yours about "Dorothy exposing the phony" was a democrat?
ReplyDeleteObama is the wizard. duh.
Michelle is NOT a "conservative" candidate. And apparently someone has NOE idea what they speak of, 150K does IN FACT buy plenty when it comes to clothes. And Obama is JUST out of paying off school lans. He wrote a couple of BEST SELLERS. Don't hate him for that. Come harder. And since it was deleted from the board I'll say it again (no mysogyny intended!) Dorothy found out that the best place for her WAS HOME. Perhaps some didn't have to analyze this book in secondary school?
ReplyDeleteThe WIZ was revealed as a man who only got people to do their best. He gave them something to dream for and allowed them to pursue their dreams. Remember he was in OZ, he didn't create it. Now the Wizard was akin to the president of the US which had NO intention to help the masses because he was only interested in benefitting comfortably from the masses.
ReplyDeletedoes keeping us safe from another terrorist attach count as "benefiting the masses" or are you talking about the communist notion that the government should take from the lucky and give to the unlucky?
